Summary

VillageReach aims to reach 100 million people in Africa by 2026 and 350 million people in Africa by 2030. The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will play an exciting and rewarding role in helping build VillageReach’s transformative growth and impact. The CFO is a strategic leader who will plan, lead, and ensure quality control over VillageReach global finances, financial activities and systems, and the financial strength of the organization.

The CFO provides strategic leadership, financial expertise, and management oversight over VillageReach financial strategy, budgeting, planning and analysis, payroll, banking, tax, accounting, and auditing functions; ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, internal controls, funding requirements, and the highest standards of financial management to meet current and future needs of the organization.

As a member of the Executive Team, the CFO will also provide strategic leadership to VillageReach and align our organizational vision and strategy and the financial goals and objectives across the organization.

Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Serve as VillageReach Treasurer, collaborating with the CEO and the Board of Directors on financial and operational strategies for achieving financial health. Bring innovative thinking about how to be financial successful in a changing world.

  • Partner with Country Directors and other senior leaders to drive strong financial management and financial strategy across the global enterprise.

  • Provide budgetary oversight, management support, and financial accountability for the organization, including leading and directing the process of annual budgeting, long-term budgeting and reforecasting, and financial planning and analysis.

  • Perform analyses, forecasts, and reporting; develop planning scenarios to inform strategic and operational decision making by the President, management team and other leadership, and the Board.

  • Lead and develop the team that ensures VillageReach has sufficient technical capacity in accounting, payroll, budgeting, banking, debt management, tax, and financial and award compliance.

  • Oversee organizational cash flow, forecasting, annual financial audits, tax compliance, and associated reporting.

  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial information, as well as the effectiveness of financial policies, procedures and practices globally.

  • Mentor, train, and support finance and administrative staff worldwide.

  • Review and improve financial systems including maintenance of current systems, review and analysis of efficiencies, and intentional upgrades/systems implementations to minimize redundancy and bottlenecks in financial reporting and analyses.

  • Perform other duties, responsibilities, and activities that may be assigned at any time.

    Requirements

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    This position directly supervises up to five (5) US-based staff, with dotted line support of three (3) additional finance staff located in country offices. The CFO carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

    Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; monitoring performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

    Education & Experience:

    Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree, with advanced degree in Accounting and/or MBA.

  • At least 10 years of progressively more complex experience directly managing and overseeing organizational financial operations.

  • Demonstrated understanding of financial risk management and mitigation, and means to drive finance strategy across an organization, effectively manage financial professionals, and ensure high standards of financial management and compliance across the organization.

  • Demonstrated experience and expertise: (1) leading finance activities in a +$25 million complex, multi-site, global nonprofit organization; (2) handling diverse compliance and reporting requirements, including US and international governments, bi-lateral, and multilateral grants and contracts; (3) financial and data management systems expertise; (4) problem-solving orientation working in diverse, dynamic, and challenging environments.

  • Proven record of building cohesive, highly productive teams and comfort in a matrixed and global environment.

  • Drive to create long term financial models that support new initiatives and creative growth

  • Forward thinking, with a strong ability to anticipate and build global business and development trends into long-term planning.

  • Willingness to support work at both the granular and strategic level

  • Available for early morning meetings with Africa offices starting at 6 am pacific time

  • Ability to work in the US; location flexible.

    Other Qualifications

  • CPA license preferred.

  • Exemplary communication skills appropriate to each of the Board, the Executive Team, managers and staff;

  • Experience working with remote or highly-dispersed teams, and a spirit of teamwork are essential to thrive at VillageReach.

  • Established cultural competency working with racial, cultural, and linguistically diverse groups.

  • Demonstrated understanding of challenges with working in rural, underserved, and low-income context; experience living in and/or working in a low-income country a plus.

  • Proficient in SAGE or other software used in an international setting, Concur, MIP, PowerPlan, BI; and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel) and comfortable in a fast-paced technical environment.

  • Comply with VillageReach’s COVID-19 vaccination policy.

  • Must be fluent in English; French or Portuguese desired.
