U.S. Embassy Political Specialist Jobs in Kenya; Serves as policy advisor to the Political Section staff within the Internal Affairs Unit. Provides expertise on domestic political issues, liaises with senior Kenyan government officials, political leaders, civil society, and media, and advises on diplomacy outreach to advance U.S. foreign policy goals. Briefs visiting U.S. officials on political trends and implications for U.S. policy objectives. Reports directly to the Senior LES Political Advisor and is reviewed by the Deputy Political Counselor.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Brief and Advise (30%) – Monitor and analyze Kenya’s political and security landscape; advise on advancing U.S. interests; facilitate roundtables; brief visiting officials.
Information Gathering and Reporting (30%) – Research and gather information from government, media, business, and civil society; prepare reports; support mandated reports (Human Rights, Religious Freedom, Trafficking in Persons, Counterterrorism).
Contact Development (20%) – Cultivate and guide Political Section staff in maintaining contacts with Kenyan officials and leaders; prepare biographic reports on political figures.
Field Work (20%) – Plan and execute field trips for information gathering and contact development; advise on in‑country travel to support U.S. policy goals.
Qualifications and Evaluations
Requirements
Ability to obtain and hold a security certificate or Public Trust clearance.
Education Requirements
University Degree in Political Science, International Relations, Law, or Business Studies.

Experience
Minimum of 5 years’ work experience, including senior‑level Kenyan government, public service, or journalism roles across multiple regions.
Extensive knowledge of, and access to, public security and political sector leadership.
Sustained interaction with diverse social interests, diplomatic community, and NGOs.
Familiarity with democratization and governance issues in less developed countries.
Demonstrated ability to analyze democracy and governance development issues.
