U.S. Embassy Librarian (Acquisitions Technician) Jobs in Kenya; The Librarian (Acquisitions Technician) supports the Head of Acquisitions in receiving, verifying, and cataloging information materials for the Library of Congress (LOC) and AfriCAP participants.
The role ensures accurate bibliographic records, initiates payment processes, and maintains holdings records while adhering to LOC cataloging standards and policies.
Key Responsibilities
Acquisitions, Receiving & Invoice Verification (50%)
Receive high volumes of publications from 30 Sub‑Saharan countries.
Verify package contents against invoices, receipts, and shipping lists.
Determine acquisition source (purchase, gift, or exchange).
Maintain shipment records for each Bibliographic Representative and country.
Search ILS, CAPS, and OPACs to verify holdings.
Attach forms/slips for processing and authorize fiscal payments.
Initial Descriptive Cataloging (35%)
Create initial cataloging records using MARC format, RDA, and LOC standards.
Catalog books, maps, government documents, recordings, microforms, and digital formats.
Perform IBC Copy Cataloging/Z‑Processing when PCC records are available.
Assign Library of Congress Control Numbers (LCCN) and barcodes.
Ensure bibliographic consistency and accuracy across databases.
Serials Check‑in (15%)
Check serials into ILS, updating holdings and item records.
Note title, volume, and numbering changes.
Update holdings summaries for LC Washington and other users.
Correct errors using validation techniques.
Requirements
Education
University degree in Library or Information Science required.
Experience
Minimum two years’ library experience with online searching and cataloging.
Language
English: Level 4 – Fluent
(speaking/reading/writing, including translation).
Kiswahili: Level 3 – Good working knowledge (speaking/reading/writing).
Job Knowledge
Knowledge of MARC formats, AACR2, RDA cataloging rules, and database management systems.
Familiarity with bibliographic formats and database searching.
Skills & Abilities
Strong computer skills including library systems and MS Office.
Basic keyboarding and numerical skills.
Ability to organize work, prioritize, and manage time effectively.
Additional Information
All candidates must obtain and hold a security certificate or Public Trust clearance.
