Duties

This is one of two non-supervisory positions in the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Juba. Under the general supervision of the Consular Chief, the incumbent is responsible for the broad management of all aspects of American Citizen Services (ACS) and limited nonimmigrant visa (NIV) workloads.

The Consular Assistant pre-screens applications for U.S. passports and Consular Reports of Birth Aboard, processes all visa applications, oversees the ACS appointment and application processing system, and ensures that the entire process is functioning smoothly.

S/he works in conjunction with Consular Chief to manage and resolve all Special Citizen Services cases (deaths, arrests, etc.). The incumbent is responsible for responding to public inquiries and for developing and maintaining contacts with South Sudanese and other diplomatic officials necessary for conducting consular work.

S/he serves as the primary sub-cashier and as the office manager for the Consular Section. The Consular Assistant serves as Arabic translator for all aspects of Consular work.

Qualifications and Evaluations

Experience:

  • Three years of experience in an office and/or customer service setting enforcing or applying laws/regulations is required.

    Job Knowledge:

  • Solid knowledge of South Sudan states, municipalities, and geographic areas; as well as knowledge of the various tribes that make up South Sudan’s
    citizenry is required

    Education Requirements:

  • College (2 years) or Post-Secondary School

    Evaluations:

    Post may choose to add the phrase “This may be tested” after a language, skill, and/or ability. Review the VA template for specific information.

    Language:

  • Level 4 - Fluent; speaking/reading/writing, may include the ability to translate

    Skills and Abilities Optional:

  • This is not required, but if used, derive from Section 15(f) of PD. These must be specific and clearly worded. The information added here will be used to qualify the applicants during the recruitment process.
