    The U.S. Mission in Addis Ababa/Ethiopia is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the position of Fuel Truck Driver (Motorpool).

    Start Date:

    Candidate must be able to begin working within a reasonable period of time (4 weeks) of receipt of agency authorization and/or clearances/ certifications or their candidacy may end.

    Supervisory Position: No

    Relocation Expenses Reimbursed: No

    Travel Required: 50% or less


  • Under the supervision of the Motor pool dispatcher incumbent operates heavy trucks, fuel trucks and forklifts in the transport, placement, and physical organization of the Embassy’s Motor pool operation.

  • As well as other official duties as assigned.

  • Operates a variety of motor vehicles including large freight hauling trucks worth approximately 150,000 dollars in the pick- up, transport, and delivery fuel, supplies and courier material in support of Mission operations in a safe manner.

  • Complies with all Department of State safety and security rules. Does not interfere with the operation of safety equipment, including the use of the DriveCam system.

  • Remains alert at all times providing necessary security for the vehicle.

  • Remains current and knowledgeable on Mission Policy for motor pool usage and reports any misuse of a vehicle by embassy personnel or co-workers.

  • Monitors the local travel/driving environment, and takes action to avoid demonstrations, road construction or areas

  • Knows the locations of hospitals, police stations, and foreign missions, warehouse and residence of the mission USDH employees.

  • Assists warehousemen in loading and offloading of vehicles and delivery as well as pick- up from offices and residences.

  • Performs daily inspection of assigned vehicle to ensure that the vehicle is clean in and outside, seatbelts are operational, and engine, radiator, brake, clutch and battery fluids are at recommended levels, and the vehicle is in good running condition.

  • Ensures that Vehicle tools and spare tire are in operational condition in the vehicle.

  • Performs minor preventive maintenance and safety checks on a daily basis and informs dispatcher or motor pool supervisor of discrepancies.

  • Completes the daily OF-XXX motor vehicle usage records for each assigned vehicle for those trips made.

  • Provides back up chauffeur/driving services for Motor pool section light vehicle.



  • Three (3) years of heavy truck driving, including two years of forklift operation, is required.

  • English level II (Limited knowledge) Reading/ Writing/ Speaking is required.

  • Amharic Level III (Good working knowledge) Speaking/Reading/Writing Amharic is required.

    Skills and Abilities

  • Must be professionally skilled at handling truck with liquid (fuel) and forklifts.

  • Must have the ability to follow instructions carefully, identify potential problems and advise supervisor, with a minimum of supervision to provide the most efficient service.

  • Class 5 driver's license is required.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 LBS. Basic computer/MS word skills/to write short emails.

  • Basic numerical skills required to count or measure whenever necessary.

  • Must understand the rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the U.S. Embassy. (These may be tested)

    Agency Benefits

    Locally Employed Staff, including Members of Household (MOHs), and Third-Country Nationals (TCNs), working at the U.S. Mission in Addis Ababa/Ethiopia may receive a compensation package that may include health, separation, and other benefits.

    For EFMs, benefits should be discussed with the Human Resources Office.

    The pay plan is assigned at the time of the conditional offer letter by the HR Office.

    Applicants who claim status as a preference-eligible U.S. Veteran must submit a copy of their most recent DD-214 (“Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty”), equivalent documentation, or certification.

    A “certification” is any written document from the armed forces that certifies the service member is expected to be discharged or released from active duty service in the armed forces under honorable conditions within 120 days after the certification is submitted by the applicant.

    The certification letter should be on letterhead of the appropriate military branch of the service and contain (1) the military service dates including the expected discharge or release date; and (2) the character of service.

    Acceptable documentation must be submitted in order for the preference to be given.

    This level of preference applies to all Foreign Service employees on LWOP and CS with re-employment rights back to their agency or bureau.

    COVID-19 Requirements for Eligible Family Members
    As required by Executive Order 14043

    Eligible Family Members who will be employed on a Family Member Appointment (FMA) or a Temporary Appointment (TEMP) are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 regardless of the employee’s duty location or work arrangement, subject to such exceptions as required by law.

    Eligible Family Members who will be employed on a Personal Services Agreement and compensated under the USG pay plan will be required to attest to their vaccination status using the Vaccine Attestation Form.

    If you are not fully vaccinated or decline to provide this information, you will be required to demonstrate proof of a negative COVID-19 test completed within 72 hours of entry to a Mission facility and comply with enhanced COVID-19 mitigation protocols.

    COVID-19 Requirements for Local Candidates

    Candidates who will be employed on either a Personal Services Agreement or a direct hire appointment and compensated under the Mission’s Local Compensation Plan will be required to follow all Mission COVID-19 policies applicable to Locally Employed Staff.
