    Summary

    The U.S. Mission in Addis Ababa/Ethiopia is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the position of Translator.

    Start Date

  • Candidate must be able to begin working within a reasonable period of time (4 weeks) of receipt of agency authorization and/or clearances/ certifications or their candidacy may end.

  • Travel with the Ambassador or DCM to interpret with local officials and contacts as required.

  • Provide interpreting assistance to other sections as needed including interpreting for presentations, trainings, and simultaneous interpretation at Town Halls, and other events might have required for this position.

    Duties

  • The incumbent serves as the Embassy's interpreter from English into Amharic and vice versa for the Ambassador, DCM, other mission officials, and visiting delegations and officials in a variety of formal settings such as bilateral meetings, formal receptions, and gatherings of senior-level officials.

  • The incumbent must accurately and confidently interpret sensitive conversations with high-level government officials, as well as presentations/ remarks given by the Ambassador and DCM before large audiences and for television and radio audiences.

  • The incumbent will translate public speeches given by high level members of the Ethiopian government on an as needed basis.

  • In addition, working in conjunction with the Protocol Assistant and the Ambassador's Office Management Specialist, the incumbent will plan and coordinate various functions as required

  • Coordinating the Ambassador's meetings with senior Government officials and other dignitaries,

  • Translating correspondence addressed to the Ambassador and DCM into English; drafting and translating letters, diplomatic notes, and other correspondence into Amharic.

    Requirements

    Experience

  • Three years of translation and interpretation experience in an international institution or any organization that executes translation services (from English to Amharic or vice versa) or international programs/policy is required.

  • Level 4 (Fluent) Speaking/ Reading/Writing Amharic is required. (This may be tested)

  • Level 4 (Fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing English is required. (This may be tested)

    Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent organizational skills to assist in planning and directing functions.

  • Good oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills, able to mingle easily with a range of individuals and in a variety of settings.

  • Ability to communicate with high-level government officials, including correcting them and/or requiring clarification.

  • Ability to determine priorities effectively. Skill in operating word processing equipment and software, including learning protocol database after entry.

  • Good skill level of data entry to manage and update the contacts database.

  • Must be able to read, speak, and write fluently in English, Amharic, and to communicate accurately and effectively, both orally and in written form, to a wide range of audiences.

  • Knowledge of American slang is preferred. Must have excellent concentration skills in order to pace translating and ensure accuracy.

  • Must be able to work with a minimum
    level of supervision.

  • Must have and maintain a high level of discretion. (These may be tested)

    Agency Benefits

    Locally Employed Staff, including Members of Household (MOHs), and Third-Country Nationals (TCNs), working at the U.S. Mission in Addis Ababa/Ethiopia may receive a compensation package that may include health, separation, and other benefits.

    For EFMs, benefits should be discussed with the Human Resources Office.

    The pay plan is assigned at the time of the conditional offer letter by the HR Office.

    Hiring Preference Selection Process

    Applicants in the following hiring preference categories are extended a hiring preference in the order listed below.

    Therefore, it is essential that these applicants accurately describe their status on the application.

    Failure to do so may result in a determination that the applicant is not eligible for a hiring preference of the appropriate military branch of the service and contain:

    Important

    A “certification” is any written document from the armed forces that certifies the service member is expected to be discharged or released from active duty service in the armed forces under honorable conditions within 120 days after the certification is submitted by the applicant. The certification letter should be on letterhead.
