    Summary

    The U.S. Mission in Addis Ababa/Ethiopia is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the position of Mechanic (Building Trades).

    The work schedule for this position is: Full Time (44 hours per week)

    Candidate must be able to begin working within a reasonable period of time (4 weeks) of receipt of agency authorization and/or clearances/ certifications or their candidacy may end.

    Duties

  • The incumbent is employed as a metalworker under Facility section to carry out skilled maintenance and repair work throughout the New Embassy Compound (NEC) functional/office buildings, on-compound ancillary support and residential buildings, recreational facilities, and other owned/leased properties.

  • The basic function of a metalworker is operating manual or automated machineries and hand tools used to form, cut, join metal, finish, and assemble metal components.

  • Jobholder would repair, adjust, and manufacture metallic doors, compound gates, windows, handrails, guardrails, grills, gutter, generator shed, and maintenance of door handles and perform inspections.

  • Also, assists, as needed other shops such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and general cleanup of work areas.

  • Other tasks of a metalworker include showing basic safety and how to operate the machine tools for less experienced workers (e.g., newly recruited junior and apprentice metalworkers).

    Experience

  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience working as a journey-level metal worker in the manufacturing, repair and maintenance of doors, compound gates, windows, handrails, guardrails, grills, gutter, generator shed and perform inspections.

  • Successful completion of High school and a vocational training diploma/certificate (2-3 years of studies) from an accredited institute recognized as producing journeyman level metalwork.

  • Ability to complete metal projects with accuracy and precision.

  • Ability to safely use machinery and tools involved in metalwork.

  • Ability to follow directions.

  • Ability to work in an environment that occasionally gets very loud.

  • Ability to identify problems or dangers, report issues and provide solution.

  • Communication and interpersonal skills to answer queries from end-users.

  • Ability to work as part of a team, work under pressure and a tight schedule.

  • Flexibility and ability to work with minimum supervision

  • A flexible approach to work shifts and answer emergency calls at all hours.

  • Ability to lift tools, equipment, or parts, maximum weight 25 kilos.

  • Incumbent serves as an incidental operator of official vehicles and meets all requirements outlined in 14 FAM 433.

  • Must have a valid Auto/2nd grade driver's license.

  • Must have had a valid driver's license for a minimum of five (5) years. (These may be tested)

    The pay plan is assigned at the time of the conditional offer letter by the HR Office.

    A “certification” is any written document from the armed forces that certifies the service member is expected to be discharged or released from active duty service in the armed forces under honorable conditions within 120 days after the certification is submitted by the applicant.

    The certification letter should be on letterhead of the appropriate military branch of the service and contain:

    (1) The military service dates including the expected discharge or release date

    (2) The character of service. Acceptable documentation must be submitted in order for the preference to be given.

    This level of preference applies to all Foreign Service employees on LWOP and CS with re-employment rights back to their agency or bureau.
