U.S. Embassy Ethiopic Languages Librarian Jobs in Kenya



U.S. Embassy Ethiopic Languages Librarian Jobs in Kenya; Serves as Ethiopic Language Librarian (Acquisitions) in the Acquisitions Section of LOC‑Nairobi. Processes books and other library materials in Amharic and related Ethiopic languages from Ethiopia and Eritrea. Creates initial bibliographic records and provides language expertise to complete cataloging. Documents invoices and receipts, authorizes fiscal processing, and may perform similar tasks for materials acquired from other countries and languages as required.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Acquisitions, Receiving, and Invoice Verification (45%) – Receive and verify incoming packages of publications, prioritize Ethiopic languages, maintain records, certify documentation, and authorize payments.

  • Initial Descriptive Cataloging / IBC Record Creation (25%) – Create initial descriptive cataloging using MARC format, RDA, AACR2, and LOC standards.

  • Serials Check‑in and Claims (15%) – Check Ethiopic‑language serials into ILS, update holdings, identify errors, and validate records.

  • Ethiopic Gift and Exchange Liaison (15%) – Manage Gift and Exchange program for Ethiopia and Eritrea, track sources, and process materials.

    Qualifications and Evaluations

    Requirements
  • Ability to obtain and hold a security certificate or Public Trust clearance.

    Education Requirements
  • College or
    university studies required.

    Evaluations

  • Candidates will be evaluated against qualifications and requirements in the vacancy announcement.

  • Pre‑employment language or skills test may be required.

  • Applications must address all qualifications and requirements including education, experience, language, and skills.

    Experience

  • Three years’ experience in a professional environment, including financial sector or translation.
