Division & Project Overview:

The Quality and Performance Institute (QPI) is a division of URC that has implemented quality improvement and operations research programs in health care since 1981 and continues to be at the cutting edge of health care improvement work in countries around the world.

With the RHITES-N Acholi Project (Regional Health Integration to Enhance Services in Northern Uganda – Acholi), USAID will continue its support of the Government of Uganda’s (GOU) efforts to improve access to and use of health services in the country’s post-conflict northern region.

RHITES-N Acholi Project activities will build on USAID investments and national advances to increase access to and use of high-quality integrated services that accelerate the ability and capacity to respond to the specific health needs of residents in the Acholi sub-region, leveraging the URC-ASSIST project successes.

Roles and Responsibilities;

  • Under the supervision of the Capacity Building Advisor, the internship Coordinator will be required to use independent analysis and judgment to develop, coordinate and supervise complex and varied administrative tasks to provide exemplary career services to recent graduates in the 8 RHITES –North, Acholi Districts.
  • The internship coordinator should be a talented individual that is committed to mentoring fresh graduates to become successful members in their field of industry.
  • The internship coordinator shall serve as a liaison between the project and business /organization in the areas that participate in RHITES-North, Acholi internship program.
  • In addition, the internship coordinator shall develop and maintain effective business relationships with external work sites while incorporating professionalism, respect, integrity and compassion in all that s/he does.

    Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • In coordination with RHITES –North Acholi management and partner organization, provide leadership in the development and implementation of a viable internship program in line with the project objective.
  • Work in coordination with the HQ programmatic and international HR teams to develop, review and implement internship policies/manual and procedures.
  • Organize selection and accreditation of host institutions and draft memoranda of understanding with the relevant authority, Work with host institutions to ensure a structured training program for interns
  • Work with host institutions to ensure that interns are provided with the necessary facilities and work space for effective performance of assigned tasks.
  • Ensure appointment of supervisors and mentors in the host institutions and link with training institutions to ensure appointment of faculty supervisors and monitoring of interns
  • Support identification of challenges and solutions for effective internship programs, prepare activity reports for internship activities, establish a tracking mechanism for employment of internship beneficiaries after internship.
  • Work with RHITES-North, Acholi management to secure internship placement with districts and other government departments, civil society organizations, private sector/organizations resident in the project implementation districts.
  • Work with RHITES-North, Acholi HR, host institutions and proposed supervisors to develop scope of work for the interns.
  • Work with HR team to coordinate identification, selection and placement of interns in the host organization. This will also involve organizing induction program to ensure interns are settled in the host organization.
  • Arrange
    for logistics for interns’ arrival at each assigned location. This include arranging for work spaces, setting up email accounts, organizing the required paper work, liaising with insurance companies to provide workman’s compensation.
  • Develop and maintain RHITES-North, Acholi internship database. The posting, length, timing of internship experience (i.e. cohort, number of weeks/months, working hours, applicant selection criteria, and compensation).
  • Support the host institutions and supervisors to conduct regular performance reviews for interns.
  • The assessment should help to ensure the internship opportunities contribute to career goals of the intern.
  • Organize periodic performance development seminars, activities and sessions for interns.
  • This will include identifying facilitators and preparing contents for the various seminars, activities and sessions.
  • Serve as the main point of contact with applicants, work with district-based teams, organizations and assessors to coordinate intern on site activities.
  • Support the intern to select/find professional mentors, develop and implement a mentorship plan.
  • Assist in the training and support of interns through an orientation or mentoring program. The interns will be taken through the key elements of youth curriculum and workforce development as part of their orientation and training before being placed for internship
  • Provide weekly updates to the Capacity Building Advisor to encompass sites visited on intern follow up and send weekly reports to the advisor.
  • Build partnership with employees to develop graduate opportunities for experiential endeavors locally within the districts.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor / Chief of Party.

    Minimum Qualifications;
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and Social Administration, Education, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Human Resources or a related field
  • Minimum of 3 years supervisory or managerial experience
  • Proven experience of managing capacity building/ internship program

    Desired Experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of corporate and /or non-profit human resource management practices and principles
  • Knowledge, understanding and skills in experiential education and career advising
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Mush have superior interpersonal skills with a demonstrated commitment to culture and diversity
  • Ability to research and quickly develop knowledge of employer recruiting strategies, job market, trends, occupational, career and personal growth
  • Proficiency with technology; including but not limited to Microsoft office suite (Word, excel, PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and work independently as a leader and as part of a team
  • Negotiation and problem-solving skills
  • Experience in working with district local governments and knowledge of the health context in Acholi region will be an added advantage
  • Be self-driven and able to work effectively under pressure
  • Knowledge of the relevant Uganda national health policies, strategies and structures
