UON Interpersonal Psychotherapy Lead Therapist Jobs in Kenya

Funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the College will see researchers in diverse fields share knowledge to better understand the complexities of urban Africa.

The College is made up of senior researchers from five partner universities, namely The University of Ghana, The United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources (Accra, Ghana), University of the Witwatersrand, University of Nairobi, and the University of Cape Town.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will conduct research on Urban Sprawl or Urban Informality in
the African urban context and will be hosted at the School of Built Environment (SBE), University of Nairobi.

The School is seeking for a highly-driven and innovative-thinking candidate to join a cutting-edge inter-disciplinary research team in the Pan African Research College on Sustainable Cities.

The research focus of this aspect of the project is to develop novel urban governance ideas to support academic research and inform urban management policy.

The researcher will be supported by teams
situated in the Cities of Cape Town, Nairobi, Johannesburg and Accra.

The successful candidate will have strong background in Urban Planning and Management,
Environmental Policy, Law or Sciences, Social Sciences, or Humanities.

They must have a strong interest
to pursue socio-environmental system by design frameworks geared towards application.

Postdoctoral candidates should have an earned PhD degree in the required background.

Prior experience in governance or urban studies is a plus but not required.

Must be a self-driven individual with innovative and independent thinking.

Must be organized and detail-oriented. Must have excellent writing and communication skills.

Background

The Depression and Primary care Partnership for Effectiveness Implementation Research (DAPPER)
project is a grant awarded to the University of Nairobi in collaboration with the University of California in San Francisco, Kenya Medical Research Institute and Makerere University to conduct effectiveness implementation hybrid randomized clinical trial of psychotherapy versus pharmacotherapy delivered by non-specialists in Kisumu County.

The project is implemented with support from the Office of Research and Grants Advancement and Support.

The project seeks to recruit an Interpersonal Psychotherapy Lead Therapist to support the activities of the DAPPER project.

The position is on contractual terms of one year, renewable based on performance and mutual
agreement.

Qualifications

The candidate is expected to have:

  • At least Diploma level education in the relevant area
  • Experience in Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) in theory and practice
  • Excellent communication skills in English language
  • High level of computer and internet skills with daily access to internet
  • High level of interpersonal skills, high emotional intelligence with strong empathy
  • Ability to establish rapport with diverse people and productively lead teams
  • Cell phone coverage in the evening (i.e. at residence) is strongly preferred to facilitate international communication across different time zones

    Roles and Responsibilities
  • At least weekly internet telephone and email updates with the Principal Investigators, local coinvestigator and UCSF cased teams.
  • In collaboration with the study’s assistant IPT
    therapist, the candidate will be responsible for holding weekly meetings with all the study IPT therapists, monitoring attendance, listening
    carefully to their cases and scoring their adherance to IPT protocol.
  • Reporting IPT therapist progress and appropriately seeking consultation on therapists and/or cases in weekly calls with the Pis and other investigators.
  • Handling all clinical emergencies or urgent clinical care needs for IPT participants and involving the on-site study coordinator(s) and investigators as indicated.
  • The candidate will be expected to carry their own case load of IPT patients and to continue
    supervision with the Pis to improve their IPT therapy skill set.
  • Participate in and sometimes conduct IPT refresher trainings at regular intervals.
  • Participate in the broader study by assisting with development and execution of data quality
    assurance plans, particularly those related to completion and tracking of IPT sessions.
  • Participate in the organization of study participant recruitment and participant flow for IPT.
  • Tke instruction and provide feedback to the lead and assistant study coordinators, identify any problems and crises with study personnel or participants and bring problems quickly to the
    attention of lead and assistant study coordinators and project principal investigators as needed.
  • To be on site for the duration of the study, with exceptions for emergencies.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by the Principal Investigator from time to time to support the program.
