Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. UNON supports programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, security, conference, and information services (www.unon.org).

The post is located in the Department of Security and Safety Service (DSS) at the Nairobi duty station. The United Nations Security and Safety Service (SSS) is responsible for providing security to delegates, staff, visiting dignitaries and other visitors. Under the direct supervision of the Chief and Deputy Chief, Security and Safety, the incumbent will perform the following:

Responsibilities

  • Prepares a draft security plan for a specific area within the overall mission area of operations.

  • Performs routine investigations or security assessments to ensure the safety of field staff to enter or return to a location where actual or suspected problems exist.

  • Ensures that all staff members and their dependents are kept fully informed on matters affecting their security.

  • Conducts routine security surveys of office and residential areas and premises.

  • Investigates and prepares reports on minor cases of theft, illegal entry, assault, or other incidents when the extent of the infraction is readily determinable.

  • Assists higher grade Security Officers in establishing policies and procedures for reviewing crisis situations and preparing contingency plans for emergencies.

  • Assists in the recruitment, training and supervision of local security guards.

  • Assists in identifying and recording United Nations assets and number of staff and dependants to be protected and estimates number of guards required.

  • Liaises with local authorities to discuss potential problems and plans possible methods of resolution.

  • Serves as member of interdisciplinary team on matters of non-routine nature, such as mine removal, evacuations, medical emergency, or hostilities that threaten the safety of staff and dependants.

  • Contributes to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Planning & Organizing:

    Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.

    Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) business administration, political/social science, psychology, international relations or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

  • Candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the G to P Examination (G to P) are recommended to apply.

  • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

    Work Experience

  • For candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP) or the G to P Examination (G to P) or the United Nations Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) no experience is required.

  • Relevant experience in the military, police, security management preferably in the police or military context or related area is desirable.

  • 1 year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required.

  • Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
