Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the Director-General of UNON is the representative of the Secretary-General in Kenya.

UNON supports programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the Resident Coordination System (RCS) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, security, conference and information services (www.unon.org).

This position is located at the Design and Construction Section of the Conference Facility Capital Project in United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON). The Project Architect Landscape and Sustainability reports to the Chief, Design and Construction Section and will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:

Within delegated authority, the Associate Architect will be responsible for performing the following duties:

Responsibilities

• Applies basic formulas to complete routine calculations for small projects or minor phases of broader assignments related to architecture and engineering requirements of large capital projects , such as design, construction, or repair of buildings, roads, waste disposal systems, flood control systems, and distribution systems, environmental control systems.

• Prepares graphs, curves, and tables.

• Records factual data in tests and observation studies.

• Performs drafting and minor detail designs.

• Searches technical reports to obtain information related to projects in process.

• Assists in surveying work to determine site selection for structures.

• Assists in calculation of stresses and strain affecting proposed structures by making routine calculations of such factors as estimated load, water pressure, soil characteristics, temperature fluctuations, and nature of building materials used.

• Prepares requisitions for procurement of construction supplies.

• Maintains liaison with local contractors and suppliers concerning the provision of supplies and services.

• Prepares proposal to achieve local and international sustainability standards.

• Prepares landscape designs of designated areas.

• Contributes to the collection and analysis of data and identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.

• Documents requirements and background information used for data analysis.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Engineering, Architecture or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

  • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

    Work Experience

  • A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in architecture or related area is required.

  • Experience in landscape architecture is desirable.

  • Experience working with LEED or BREEAM sustainable standards is desirable.

  • One (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
