UN Nairobi Staff Union is the representative body for all staff working in UNON, UN Environment and UN-Habitat in Nairobi and across the globe. The purposes of the United Nations Nairobi Staff Union are to promote the objectives of the Charter of the United Nations, safeguard the rights, interest, welfare, responsibilities & obligations of the members of the staff and to maintain relations and co-operation with staff organizations and similar bodies of other inter-governmental organizations and, in particular, of the United Nations Secretariat and of the specialized agencies of the United Nations. The position is in the UNON, Nairobi Staff Union, Nairobi, Kenya.

The purpose of the Staff Union are:

  • To promote the objectives of the Charter of the United Nations.

  • To promote and safeguard the rights, interests, welfare, responsibilities and obligations of the members of the staff of the working with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT); the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP); and the United Nations office at Nairobi (UNON)

  • To maintain relations and co-operation with staff organizations and similar bodies of other inter-governmental organizations, and in particular, of the United Nations Secretariat and of the specialized agencies of the United Nations.

    The internship UNON, Communications Internship is for 6 months.

    The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

    Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

    Responsibilities

    Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

    Under the direct supervision of the President, UN Nairobi Staff Union (NSU) the intern will:

  • Assist in managing Nairobi Staff Union Website.

  • Research, compile and present basic information for use in the preparation and production of communications products/services.

  • Creating and updating content for Nairobi Staff Union website and social media.

  • Capturing creative photos and video for Nairobi Staff Union.

  • Assist with Nairobi Staff Union calendar of events.

  • Assist in the gathering of information and materials using different platforms or media.

  • Assist with the writing, editing and communication content, including newsletters, event announcements, web content, creative digital content and other targeted communications.

  • Participate in the daily operations of Nairobi Staff Union and supporting the web developer team in the performance of their tasks and responsibilities.

  • Assist with data back-up of the Nairobi Staff Union.

  • Provide logistical support in the Nairobi Staff Union office.

  • Undertake other assignments as required for the development and implementation of Nairobi Staff Union website.

  • Participate in the daily operations of the branch by supporting the staff in the performance of their tasks and responsibilities, including taking part in meetings, document reviews, etc.

Establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by gaining their trust and respect. Identifies clients’ needs and matches them to appropriate solutions. Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems.

    Education

    Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).

  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).

  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.

  • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    Preferred Area of studies:

  • Journalism, Public Relations, Communications or any other related field of study.

    Work Experience

  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

  • Fluency in Microsoft Office particularly Excel and PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams is required.

  • Excellent command of UK English, business English and an understanding of tailoring language based on audience is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
