  • The University of the Witwatersrand invites applications for the post of Director of the Global Change research Institute (GCI). The candidate appointed to the Directorship will be an academic with a strong record of scholarship and academic leadership.

  • The GCI is one of several transdisciplinary Research Institutes operated within the University as a strategic contribution to the challenges faced by South African and African societies in the 21st Century. The Institute is a significant marker of the University’s intention to lend prestige and standing in the area of global change and sustainability research.

    Brief Description

    Requirements:

    The appointed Director will have:

    • An international scholarly reputation, based largely on an outstanding record as a published researcher;

    • Sufficient academic and / or professional standing to command the respect and confidence of the members of the Institute and University;

    • Academic vision and leadership;

    • A good track record of fund-raising for large projects.

    He or she will be expected to:

  • Build the Institute into substantive centre of international standing through significant fund-raising, in co-operation with the University’s strategic aspirations;

  • Consolidate and manage
    the existing programmes within the Institute;

  • Build partnerships both locally and internationally;

  • Develop an original and challenging research programme, taking into account the requirement of donors;

  • Undertake high quality research in relevant fields and publish such research in high quality, normally international, peer reviewed journals and books;

  • Supervise postgraduate students and host postdoctoral fellows.

  • The Director will manage, consolidate and expand the Institute, co-ordinate its postgraduate teaching, research and administrative activities; plan and promote academic activities in the wider community; human resources recruitment and management; and financial infrastructure resource management.

  • The University wishes to make a five year appointment, in the first instance. It is anticipated that an extended appointment would be on offer thereafter, subject to successful performance of the Director and the continuing availability of funds.

  • The Director will report to an appropriate Deputy Vice-Chancellor and the work of the Institute will be broadly overseen by an Advisory Board.

    Qualifications:

  • An appropriate PhD, a significant publication record; relevant administrative and research management experience; fund-raising experience; experience within a university academic environment.
