  • The successful candidate will join a dynamic and supportive Faculty dedicated to teaching and research, as well as to overall student development. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and willing to make a significant contribution to the development of the Faculty.

  • The Language Education Department seeks to advance the Faculty of Education's commitment to research-driven service to the basic education (school) sector via the promotion of multilingual, dialogical and decolonising approaches to language teacher education.

  • The Department invites applications for the post of Professor / Associate Professor with expertise and experience in research and pedagogies on English language teaching and academic literacy development.

  • The successful candidate will be required to contribute to and strengthen the following academic activities:

  • Facilitate learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in English language teaching and academic literacy

  • Conduct research and publish in English language teaching and academic literacy

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate supervision

  • Provide academic leadership

  • Take a leadership role in curriculum development and assessment

  • Community engagement and outreach

  • Administration and serving on institutional committees

  • Engage in national and international networks

  • Provide leadership and mentoring to staff

  • Serve as Chairperson of the Language Education Department (for specified period/s.)

    Minimum Requirements

  • The successful candidate would meet the following minimum requirements:

    For the level of Professor:

  • A PhD in Language Education or Literacy Studies or a cognate field.

  • Extensive experience in facilitating learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, in the field of Language Education and Literacy.

  • A strong research and publications record (comprising peer reviewed and/or accredited journal articles, books or book
    chapters in reputable publications).

  • A record of successful postgraduate supervision.

  • Evidence of expertise, national and international standing and networks in his/her discipline.

  • Proven leadership ability.

  • Experience in attracting grant funding.

    For the level of Associate Professor:

  • A PhD in Language Education or Literacy Studies or a cognate field.

  • Extensive experience in facilitating learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, in the field of Language Education and Literacy.

  • A strong research and publications record (comprising peer reviewed and/or accredited journal articles, books or book chapters in reputable publications).

  • A record of successful postgraduate supervision.

  • Evidence of expertise, national and international standing and networks in his/her discipline.

  • Proven leadership ability.

    The following would be added advantages and/or recommendations for both P and AP level:

  • An NRF Rating is a strong recommendation

  • Proficiency in or ability to work with South African languages (particularly isiXhosa and Afrikaans)
