Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas

Our Library mission is to enrich the learning, teaching and research experience through dynamic services to enable academic success. An exciting opportunity exists in the UWC library for a suitably qualified candidate to:

  • Lead and provide strategic direction in UWC library policies, procedures, plans and systems for effective management in embedding the library services in teaching and learning in alignment to the university IOP 2021-2025.

  • To work with the Library management team to drive strategies for UWC Library to achieve its mission and vision.

  • The specific focus of this job is to develop, implement and assess library services in the 21st century, that enhance student learning and teaching in a digital research led university.

    The successful incumbent is responsible for the following Key Performance Areas:

  • To assist the Library Director with the overall strategic management of the Library, in particular leadership and management of the integration of the library in UWC academia.

  • Advocacy and planning to secure the integration of the library by building strategic relationships and engagement with stakeholders by forging effective Faculty-Librarian collaborations.

  • Provide overall leadership within the Learning & Teaching team for the selection of appropriate information resources for UWC Faculties, including maintenance of collection development, management and evaluation guidelines.

  • Development, implementation and assessment of the library’s programs and services eg. Analysis of statistics for decision making, Customer care and needs surveys, Benchmarking exercises, etc.

  • Lead a team of senior librarians, faculty librarians and specialist staff
    for delivery of a 21st century information service within a digital university. Manage the team’s human resources and performance to ensure attainment of planned objectives (Induction, supervision, performance monitoring and staff development).

  • Overall management of Library communications, marketing and outreach programs.

  • Perform any tasks or duties which fall within the general management function of the Library services.

    Minimum Requirements (Qualification and Experience)

  • M.Bibl/MLIS or equivalent qualification at an NQF Level 9

  • 8-10 years in an academic library, with proven track record in library management and leadership in learning, teaching and research.

  • LIASA membership (please attach a certified copy of 2022 membership certificate).

    Required competencies (skills, knowledge and behavioural attributes):

  • Strong Management and Leadership skills.

  • Pedagogical and technical knowledge.

  • Strong ability to work effectively and efficiently as part of a team with many internal and external constituencies in university environment.

  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal communication and computer skills.

  • Experience in policy design and implementation.

  • A strong record of leadership and research in the academic environment.

  • Networking and Marketing skills.

  • Engagement with professional bodies and external library stakeholders.
