  • The Department of Private Law, within the Faculty of Law, invites applications for appointment to the level of Associate Professor/ Professor to commence employment soonest. The Department intends to strengthen research and teaching across a number of areas of the private law curricula.

  • We wish to appoint an applicant who is an academic leader, or has clear potential to be an academic leader, who desires to be part of the Law Faculty, which values a critical, doctrinal and comparative approach to the study of the law.

  • This incumbent will be appointed substantively and permanently as Associate Professor/ Professor. In addition to this, the incumbent is expected to take on the Head of Department (HOD) responsibility for Private Law for a fixed period. Once the HODship period has concluded the incumbent will revert to the substantive academic post.

    Requirements:

    Associate Professor:

    • A PhD degree or proof of a significant body of work.

    • Proven and significant experience of and a strong commitment to teaching at tertiary level (specifically in the LLB programme).

    • Ability/willingness to teach in any of the following Private Law courses: Succession Law; Property Law; Private Law: Systems and Context; Unjustified Enrichment; and Legal Writing.

    • Evidence of academic leadership and proven ability to assume the position of HoD for a fixed period.

    • Evidence of ability to supervise academic research effectively, including postgraduate research.

    • A strong and consistent record of publications appropriate to the Associate Professor level, demonstrating the existence of a defined body of work.

    • Strong track record of socially responsive activities and professional service.

    • A strong national standing. International standing will be an advantage.

    Professor:

    • A PhD degree or proof of a significant body of work.

    • Proven and significant experience of and a
    strong commitment to teaching at tertiary level (specifically in the LLB programme).

    • Ability/willingness to teach in any of the following Private Law courses: Succession Law; Property Law; Private Law: Systems and Context; Unjustified Enrichment; and Legal Writing.

    • Evidence of academic leadership and proven ability to assume the position of HoD for a fixed period.

    • Evidence of ability to supervise academic research effectively, including postgraduate research.

    • A strong and consistent record of publications appropriate to the Professorial level, demonstrating the existence of a defined body of work.

    • Strong track record of socially responsive activities and professional service.

    • Strong national and international standing and collaborations with distinguished academics and industry professionals.

    Responsibilities:

    • Teaching courses offered by the Department of Private Law as required by the Department.

    • Teaching and supervision (at 60 percent normal load).

    • Responsible for the development of skills (writing and learning) for law students.

    • Maintaining a research profile and publication output commensurate for level of appointment at senior academic level

    • Contributing to Faculty and Department activities and administration responsibilities appropriate to the level of appointment.

    • Serve at least a term as Head of the Department (HOD) of Private Law.
