United Nations Population Fund Programme Specialist, Gender & Human Rights Jobs in Kenya



The Programme Specialist Gender and Human Rights analyses the girl/women status as well as the social and policy related environment in-country. She/he is proactive in preparing reports, updates and information on progress and achievements of these components of UNFPA supported programme, in line with results-based management.

He/she ensures coherence with agreed national and international planning framework, including UNFPA Strategic Plan, the agreed United Nations Development Assistance Framework, the National Development Plan, the Joint Assistance Strategy and related sectoral strategies.


Responsibilities


  • The Programme Specialist, Gender provides strategic technical, policy and programmatic leadership in the area of Gender, Human Rights Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Harmful Practices to UNFPA’s interventions within the country.
  • S/he is part of UNFPA country office senior staff and plays a leadership role in coordinating and managing gender equality and related thematic interventions of the UNFPA-supported programme including gender mainstreaming; gender budgeting; gender-based violence; women empowerment; and empowerment and protection of the adolescent girl.
  • She/he ensures effective integration of gender interventions with SRHR, HIV and humanitarian response programmes.
  • S/He is to remain abreast of the organization’s policies and programme strategies, as well as current thinking, innovation and academic advance in the substantive area in order to provide the required technical support.
  • S/he analyses country’s context as well as specific sub-national level trends, and contributes to strategic action in response to these, while ensuring that Gender and Human Rights issues are adequately addressed within national, sectoral and sub-national development frameworks and programmes, in relation to the achievement of UNFPA Strategic Plan 2018 to 2021, SDGs and the ICPD Plan of Action.
  • S/He maintains primary responsibility for the provision of technical assistance, advocacy, policy and
    programme support to the government, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs)s, development partners, international and national organizations and the UN system in Uganda in the substantive areas of Gender, Human Rights, GBV and harmful practices.


    Requirements


  • Advanced university degree in gender studies and/or other related social science field.
  • 5 to 8 years’ professional experience preferably in programme/project management in the public or private sector, including international development assistance and relevant experience on gender, human rights and culturally sensitive programming
  • Broad experience in GBV programming and coordination or interventions on child marriage, including in managing large multi-sectoral projects, in designing and appraising proposals and actively liaising with relevant and potential project partners including civil society, government and donors;
  • Demonstrated experience in advocacy, negotiations and/or policy dialogue, essential;
  • Prior training in gender and GBV issues and their application in humanitarian, conflict, recovery and development settings;
  • Initiative; strong conceptual abilities; sound judgment; strong networking ability and relationship management;
  • Languages: Fluency in oral and written English.
  • Computer skills: Proficiency in current office software applications
  • Languages:Fluency in English; knowledge of Karamoja region Local dialect is desirable
