The two internship position are located in the Indian Ocean West Team of the Global Maritime Crime Programme based in Nairobi, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) The internship is for six (6) months. The internship is UNPAID and full-time, 5 days per week (40 hours).  The Indian Ocean West (IOW) team of the Global Maritime Crime Programme is based in the Regional Office for Eastern Africa in Nairobi.

The programme has extensive experience and knowledge in supporting states in the region in the fight against maritime crime and has a programming presence in the following countries in the East African Region: Angola, Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Namibia, Pakistan, Seychelles, and Tanzania. The interns will work under the direct supervision of the Professional staff of the Global Maritime Crime Programme.

Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship in-person. The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Contribute to the preparation of background documents, presentations, summaries, talking points and speeches.

  • Assist in the preparation of technical assistance workshops, meetings, high-level events and conferences

  • Attend and take notes at meetings.

  • Perform other tasks as necessary

    Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme, but are encouraged to list all relevant work experience in their application

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in English, i.e. oral and written proficiency is required. Working knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
