United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction Early Warning Expert Jobs in KenyaThe consultant will support the roll‑out of the early warning project in Uganda, focusing on the risk knowledge thematic area and collaborating with other thematic pillars.
The role strengthens national early warning systems, supports capacity development, and enhances resilience against water‑related climate disasters.
Key Responsibilities
Support national stakeholders in establishing and operationalizing the national situation room in Uganda.
Link the situation room to Emergency Coordination Centres and the Africa Multi‑Hazard Early Warning and Action System (AMHEWAS).
Lead in‑country coordination of WHCA with the Office of the Prime Minister, UNDRR and consortium partners.
Plan and deliver WHCA project activities to strengthen multi‑hazard early warning systems and community resilience.
Facilitate capacity development, risk data governance and technical assessments.
Provide logistical and technical support for workshops and consultations on climate action.
Support data maturity assessments, risk data governance and training on multi‑hazard risk assessments (including in Sudan).
Undertake project‑related travel as necessary.
Qualifications / Special Skills
Advanced university degree in Disaster Risk Reduction, Early Warning, Meteorology, Climatology, Geomatics, Hydrology or Hydrogeology required.
First‑level degree with 2 additional years
of experience may be accepted.
Minimum 5 years’ experience in disaster risk assessment, early warning systems and risk analysis.
Experience with hydrometeorological hazards (floods, landslides, droughts) assessment and mapping required.
Experience in vulnerability assessment, weather forecasting and monitoring required.
Proven experience leading or contributing to country‑led strategy development initiatives.
Experience convening multi‑stakeholder partnerships, events or consultations desirable.
Experience with government institutions or international organizations in early warning/DRR required.
Experience in capacity strengthening and resource mobilization desirable.
Languages
Fluency in English required.
Knowledge of French desirable.
