United Nations Office at Nairobi Nursing Jobs

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN Headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General.



We support Programme implementation of the UN Environment Programme (UN Environment) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference and information services.


This position is located in the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) Human Resources Management Service (HRMS) in the United Nations Joint Medical Service (JMS).

Under the direct supervision of the Head Nurse, the incumbent will perform the following duties:


Responsibilities


Man, the 24-hour Medical Situation Control Centre (SITCEN), on shift work rotation basis (which covers day and Night shifts):

  • Respond to Medical emergency calls in Gigiri and any mass casualties affecting UN in the entire region;
  • Assist Medical Officer in providing adequate care to patients;
  • Ensure effective liaison between patient and private doctor, paramedics, family members and colleagues as appropriate;
  • Visit hospitalized patients and writes medical reports;
  • Ensure that patients being evacuated have travel documents and book patients to the admitting hospitals;
  • Order and/or undertake bedside and laboratory diagnostic and screening tests such as ECG, x-rays, laboratory and other tests as required;
  • Ambulance operation may be required during emergencies.

  • Assess needs of clients visiting the walk-in clinic by undertaking clerkship, physical examination, diagnosis and providing care/advice accordingly or facilitate referral to the UN Medical Officer or to an outside physician as indicated.
  • Conduct phlebotomy to client with proper sample identification and processing to the laboratory.
  • Ensure preparedness of staff traveling on mission or reassignment including administration of appropriate vaccine, instruction on malaria prophylaxis and other travel related ailments; Instructs on the content and potential of uses of the travel kit.
  • Assist in providing health education and participates in work environment, occupational health and other specific health issues.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

    Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. Training in Nursing is required. Must be a Kenya Registered Nurse (KRN) or Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse (KRCHN) with a valid license from the Ministry of Health.
  • Formal certification in CPR in either BCLS, PHTLS, ETB, ACLS, ATLS or equivalent emergency medical certification, and a valid driver's license is required. Working knowledge of occupational and travel nursing in addition to clinical nursing is an asset.

    Work Experience


  • A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in nursing or related field and experience working in an emergency medical setting, is required.
  • Additional working experience in an occupational health setting is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For this post, fluency in written and oral English is required. Knowledge of other UN official languages is an advantage.
