United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan Special Assistant, Political Affairs Jobs


Org. Setting and Reporting

  • This position is located in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan of the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG), Juba. Juba is classified as "E" category and a non-family duty station. Under the overall guidance of the SRSG, the Special Assistant, P-3, will report to the Principal Coordination Officer, head of the SRSG Front Office.

    Responsibilities

    Within limits of delegated authority, the Special Assistant will be responsible for performing the following duties:

  • Provide substantive and practical support to the SRSG in implementing the Mission’s mandate;

  • Keep the SRSG informed about all matters requiring his personal attention, assist in formulating options as to how those matters might be handled, and ensure appropriate follow-up, as directed;

  • Coordinate incoming and outgoing correspondence;

  • Draft correspondence for the SRSG's signature;

  • Support the organization and management of the SRSG's meetings and Mission events, prepare written summaries and conduct follow-up activities, as appropriate;

  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with mission components, the authorities, civil society, the broader UN family, donors and other national and international partners on coordination and policy matters;

  • Identify, analyze and monitor political developments and emerging issues with respect to the implementation of the Mission’s mandate;

  • Coordinate/draft summary and analytical reports including, but not limited to, situation reports, briefing notes, notes to file, press communiqués, code cables and input for the reports of the Secretary-General to the Security Council;

  • Assist in managing the implementation of the Mission’s programme of work, including through support to planning and budgetary processes;

  • Facilitate the flow of information between Mission sections.

  • Perform other relevant duties as requested by the SRSG.

    Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, social science, economics, law, public administration, or a related field. A first university degree with a combination of two years professional and academic qualifications may be accepted in lieu of the Master's degree or equivalent.

    Work Experience

  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in political affairs, diplomacy, conflict resolution, or related field. Experience in political outreach, facilitation, analysis, advice and reporting is required.

  • Experience working in a United Nations common system field operation (inclusive of peacekeeping, political missions and UN agencies, funds, and programmes) or similar international organization or non-governmental organization- in a conflict or post-conflict setting is required.

  • Previous experience working in the office of a senior public official and/or as a Special Assistant (or similar) to a senior public official is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in spoken and written English is required.
