Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Communications & Public Information Section, CPIS, within the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS), Juba. Juba is classified in the "E" category and as a non-family duty station. The Radio Producer reports to the Chief of Service, Public Information through Chief of Radio Unit.

Responsibilities

Within limits of delegated authority, the Radio Producer will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Supervises production staff and ensures coverage of activities related to the mission, as well as significant political, social and cultural events in the country, as appropriate; responsible for editorial policies and all aspects of production of radio programmes, including public service announcements, news stories, features and documentaries for local, regional and international use;

  • Devises an appropriate national, regional and international distribution system for the mission’s radio and digital multimedia products;

  • Develops and maintains positive, constructive, and harmonious working relations with the radio and digital/social media sector in the host country, including managing production and broadcast partnerships and capacity building programmes as appropriate.

  • Supervises editorial inputs for radio and station’s social media platforms and ensure coverage of activities related to the mission as well as significant political, social and cultural events in the mission area, as appropriate, and ensure that editorial focus is integrated with other components, programmes and products of the public information team; supervise all aspects of multimedia production including public service announcements, news stories, features and documentaries for local, regional and international use;

  • Generates/Provides raw audio material for (a) mission products, including for community outreach, (b) internal mission use such as training of mission personnel, (c) United Nations Headquarters, (d) local and international media as appropriate;

  • Ensures that the radio station integrates and utilizes digital media platforms and opportunities, including linking with key UNHQ digital platforms and tools;

  • Prepares periodic status reports on radio/digital multimedia strategy implementation;

  • Interprets mission mandate as it applies to radio/multimedia production and exercise editorial judgment over programmes;

  • Develops, writes, edits, and records original radio programmes, announcements, features and news segments, for broadcast, as required;

  • Manages and coordinates a team of other radio producers or public information staff and/or mentors and supervises the work of junior officers on specific projects.

  • Participates in the recruitment and supervision of staff; develops capacity building programmes for national staff and trains/mentors national staff on a continuous/daily basis.

  • Anticipates/Interprets departmental/sectional needs, solves technical challenges and develops solutions, as well as explains how the elements of a project converge.

  • Analyses, plans and prepares the unit/section budget, when directed;

  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

    Competencies

  • Professionalism: State-of-the-art knowledge in the field of radio, broadcast journalism and/or public information.
    Professional ability to record and edit audio; ability to copy edit. Shows ability to develop communications products for national and global audiences and to address a wide range of issues related to UN work and the Mission’s mandate. Demonstrates capacity to take the lead on major public information radio campaigns; substantial and diverse experience in all facets of communications and public information.

  • Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; Listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; Asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; Tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

  • Managing Performance: Makes sure that roles, responsibilities, and reporting lines are clear to each staff member. Monitors progress and performance against expected outcomes, milestones, and deadlines. Regularly discusses performance and provides feedback and coaching to staff. Actively supports the development and career aspirations of staff.

    Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in journalism/communications, international relations, political science, broadcasting, or other related fields. A first level university degree with additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

    Work Experience

  • At least seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience as a radio producer is required.

  • Proven history in broadcast journalism and overseeing the production of radio programming is required.

  • Experience in Radio Broadcasting Journalism in Africa is desirable.

  • Experience working in Radio Broadcasting Journalism with UN Entities, Agencies and Funds and Programs is desirable.

  • Experience working in UN Peacekeeping in Africa is desirable

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English, both oral and written is required.
