Org. Setting and Reporting
These positions are located in the Joint Mission Analysis Centre (JMAC), Juba, Wau and Aweil of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The incumbents will report to Chief JMAC.

Responsibilities
The Joint Mission Analysis Centre (JMAC) is a multidisciplinary analysis unit within the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan. JMAC manages information and produces analytical materials intended to create contextualized situation awareness, threat assessment, and support forward planning and policy to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). Under the overall direction of the Chief of JMAC and the direct Supervision of the JMAC Analytical Team Leaders, the Associate Information Analyst is responsible for:
• Maintain an understanding of the political, security, social-economic, development and humanitarian situation in the Mission area and in the region, through monitoring and gathering data/information on developments/events from multiple sources including UNMISS civilian/military/police components, the UNCT, local and national authorities, NGOs, media and other key stakeholders.
• Regularly visit the geographical area they are responsible for and familiarizing themselves with realities on the ground and various organizations working there.
• Organize, analyze, and synthesize information to support the production of accurate and timely JMAC analytical products and briefings, in coordination with other Mission components and resources.
• Identify emerging issues, trends and dynamics and forecasting threats that may have implications on the implementation of UNMISS mandate.
• Critically assess the quality of information, resolve apparent contradictions and identify potential biases of information sources.
• Independently provide high-quality written analysis of varying length and complexity that cogently explains the “so what” of an issue to inform Mission leadership.
• Respond to ad-hoc requests and tasking from UNMISS Senior Management in an efficient and cooperative manner.
• Contribute to effective working relationship within the JMAC and other UN Mission components, the UNCT and relevant external actors and organizations. Meet with relevant stakeholders, identify new sources of information to help fill information gaps; develop and maintain network of contacts that can be leveraged to provide unique insight and contextualization to inform JMAC analysis and to complement other information sources.
• Ensure that the appropriate level of confidentiality of JMAC products is maintained.
• Perform other duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, social science, security, international relations, foreign affairs, law or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience and relevant academic/professional qualifications may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.


Work Experience
  • A minimum of two (2) years with a Master’s Degree or equivalent or four years with a first level degree of progressively responsible experience in intelligence or information analysis, political science, international relations, journalism, human rights, development, security (military or police) or related field is required.

  • Extensive experience in research, information analysis and drafting of integrated analytical products under tight deadlines is required.

  • Experience working in or in support of a field operation of the United Nations Common System or a comparable international organization is desirable.

  • Experience working in the geographical region of operations is desirable.

  • Experience working in an integrated civilian military-police environment is desirable.

  • Experience in political economy analysis is desirable.

    Languages
    English is the working language of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.
    For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of
    other languages spoken in South Sudan is an asset.

    Assessment
    Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
