    Org. Setting and Reporting

    The Internship is located in the African Center for Gender (ACG) of the Social Development Policy Division (SDPD) at the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Addis Ababa.

    The internship is for three (3) months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the Center. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. The intern will work for five days per week under the supervision of the Chief of the Center.

    The SDPD aims to promote inclusive and equitable social development for Africa’s transformation, in line with internationally and regionally agreed commitments and frameworks, and to support the priorities of the member States.

    The mandate of the Division is to undertake analytical and empirical research and strengthen the capacities of member States to design and implement appropriate policies that promote inclusive and equitable development in the areas of employment and social protection, population, youth, women’s empowerment, and urbanization.     Responsibilities

  • Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Center, the Intern will carry out the following functions:
  • Assist in the review and finalization of reports and other publications in the areas of work of the African Center for Gender (ACG);
  • Contribute to research in the thematic area of focus of ACG;
  • Contribute to policy briefs;
  • Support the organization of meetings and events;
  • Assist with knowledge management and outreach activities;
  • Participate in day-to-day operational tasks of the section. This may include servicing requests for information;
  • support for developing presentations; liaison with partner organizations, communication pieces of the ACG, etc.;
  • Perform administrative tasks as assigned.

    Education

  • To qualify for an internship under the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
  • Applications must meet one of the following requirements: be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • or have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications;
  • Have a demonstrated and keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    Work Experience

  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the United Nations Internship Programme.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for the United Nations Internship Programme.
  • Knowledge of another United Nations language, preferably French, will be considered an asset.
