    Org. Setting and Reporting

    The Human Resources Services Section, Division of Administration (HRSS/DOA) at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Addis Ababa is offering an internship for a maximum duration of six months.

    Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

    The UNECA is mandated to promote the economic and social development of its member States, foster intra-regional integration, and promote international cooperation for Africa's development. To find out more about UNECA, please go to www.uneca.org.

    Responsibilities

  • The functions of the intern will depend on the individual's background and on the current projects/ workload of the Section.

    Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Learning & Development Activities and Language Training & Career Support Programme;
  • Assists in organizing training programmes and workshops;
  • Provides logistical and administrative support to trainers;
  • Performs day to day administrative tasks at the Career Resource Center;
  • Assists with maintaining a schedule of the language teachers General Administration;
  • Undertakes research on a range of HR related issues and assists in the preparation of notes/reports;
  • Provides general office support services; processes, drafts, edits, proofreads and finalizes for signature/approval a variety of correspondence and other communications;
  • Sets up and maintains files/records (electronic and paper);
  • Schedules appointments/meetings, monitors deadlines, etc.;
  • Undertakes other related activities as assigned by the supervisor.

  • Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects; Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

    Education

  • To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
  • be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher);
  • pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages;
  • be completed at least four years of fulltime studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.

    Moreover, the applicant need to

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter;
  • and a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    Work Experience

  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the United Nations Internship Programme.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English and or (both oral and written) is required for the Internship Programme.
  • Knowledge of French is desirable.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.
