Org. Setting and Reporting
The Human Resources Services Section, Division of Administration (HRSS/DOA) at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Addis Ababa is offering an internship for a maximum duration of six months.
Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
The UNECA is mandated to promote the economic and social development of its member States, foster intra-regional integration, and promote international cooperation for Africa's development. To find out more about UNECA, please go to www.uneca.org.The functions of the intern will depend on the individual's background and on the current projects/ workload of the Section.
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Learning & Development Activities and Language Training & Career Support Programme;
Assists in organizing training programmes and workshops;
Provides logistical and administrative support to trainers;
Performs day to day administrative tasks at the Career Resource Center;
Assists with maintaining a schedule of the language teachers General Administration;
Undertakes research on a range of HR related issues and assists in the preparation of notes/reports;
Provides general office support services; processes, drafts, edits, proofreads and finalizes for signature/approval a variety of correspondence and other communications;
Sets up and maintains files/records (electronic and paper);
Schedules appointments/meetings, monitors deadlines, etc.;
Undertakes other related activities as assigned by the supervisor.
Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; Listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately
Asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; Tailors language, tone, style and format to match the audience;
Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; Solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others;
Places team agenda before personal agenda; Supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position ;
Shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.
Considers all those to whom services are provided to be “clients ” and seeks to see things from clients’ point of view;
Establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by gaining their trust and respect;
Identifies clients’ needs and matches them to appropriate solutions;
Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems;
Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects; Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher);
pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages;
be completed at least four years of fulltime studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
Moreover, the applicant need to
Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter;
and a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the United Nations Internship Programme.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English and or (both oral and written) is required for the Internship Programme.
Knowledge of French is desirable.
Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.
