Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The Africa Office helps to implement UN Environment's Regional programs in Africa by initiating, coordinating and catalysing regional and sub-regional cooperation and action in response to environmental, challenges, opportunities and emergencies. This position is located in the UN Environment's Africa Office at the Nairobi duty station.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the development, programming, testing, debugging and implementation of new application systems releases, modules and functionalities.
  • Develops, tests and implements simple computer application systems and programs using UN established standards for IT technologies, programming languages and tools.
  • Serves as team member in the planning, specification, design, development, implementation and support of computer application systems; independently liaises with users to define and specify requirements.
  • Installs computer application systems software and hardware according to specifications; monitors computer applications systems using appropriate monitoring tools and produces monitoring reports.
  • Prepares technical and user documentation for deployed computer application systems, as well as training materials and conducts technical presentations.
  • Uses relevant computer software, e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop, Illustrator and In-Design, to create promotional material in appropriate format to support the advocacy initiatives and campaigns of the Section including: graphic design work for print products such as posters and reports, infographics, brochures, presentations, announcements, ensuring photos and graphics conform to UN standards
  • Provides specialized assistance in the graphic production and delivery of public information products and services, including collection, analysis, and interpretation of data and subsequent generation of reports; develops graphics and interactive features to reflect section’s work
  • Manages updates and further develops internal databases; updates Customer Relationship Management database; generates a variety of standard and non-standard statistical and other reports from various databases.
  • Assist with the management section’s web platform; preparing new pages, incorporating graphics as needed, using appropriate authoring tools and necessary programming languages; retrieving and downloading pertinent documentation and other information in requisite programming languages for Web format or inserting into database after determining appropriate categorization; preparing and updating index of documents; posting documents on the UN web and/or development servers and ensuring the appropriate directory location; checking and testing for multiple browser support.
  • Assists with the development of content and updates for website and social media platforms.
  • Assists with the design of web templates and graphic elements for web platform and promotional materials.
  • Advise on usability and accessibility issues for websites.
  • Researches, compiles and presents basic information for use in the preparation and production of communications products/services.
  • Seeks to foster external partnerships and explores new platforms in regards to digital engagement, assesses their suitability and advises on their usage and relevance to the Departments.
  • Ensures availability and appropriate packaging of products for distribution at special events, exhibits, conferences and other public and media functions
  • Attends web editorial board meetings
  • Keeps abreast of developments in the field; performs benchmarking and proposes new acquisitions.
  • Provides guidance to new/junior staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Competencies

  • Professionalism: Knowledge of organizational information infrastructure, including hardware, software and application systems. Knowledge of relevant programming language(s) and ability to use programming skills to develop information systems.

    Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Supplementary training in computer programming as well as good mastery of Microsoft Office and Web authoring tools is highly desirable.
  • Must have passed the United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) or the Global General Service Test (GGST) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally-administered test at Offices away from Headquarters.

    Work Experience

  • A minimum of seven years of progressive work experience in website information systems and programming, international broadcasting or related area is required.
  • Experience working with design applications such as Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop and In-Design is highly desirable. Experience with managing and updating websites is desired.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
