United Nations Human Settlements Programme Statistician Jobs in Kenya;The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN‑Habitat) is seeking a Chief Statistician to lead the Data and Statistics Unit (DSU) within the Knowledge & Innovation Branch. The role strengthens housing and urban data availability, accessibility, and analysis, supporting global monitoring of SDG 11 and the New Urban Agenda, and advancing UN‑Habitat’s research, advocacy, and capacity‑building agenda.

Key Responsibilities

Data Collection & Methodology

  • Initiate and coordinate development of methods for obtaining relevant housing and urban data.

  • Advance application of digital technology for data collection, analysis, and dissemination.

  • Ensure accuracy, consistency, and comparability of collected data.

    Analysis & Capacity Building

  • Plan and conduct analytical programmes of work in statistics.

  • Identify projects, conduct analysis, and participate in technical advisory activities for national capacity building.

  • Undertake methodological research on standards, concepts, definitions, and classifications.

    Database & Tools Development

  • Supervise development of databases, web publishing tools, and software for statistical data.

  • Develop new/improved statistical methods and quantitative models for analysis and projections.

    Guidance & Advisory

  • Provide guidance to departments, field experts, and partners on statistical programmes.

  • Plan and coordinate seminars, workshops, and expert meetings.

  • Supervise and manage the work of the section.

    Coalition & Advocacy

  • Provide substantive support to the Global Urban Data Coalition.

  • Engage partners, supervise knowledge products, and prepare technical inputs.

  • Collect and analyze data to identify trends and provide insights using visualization methods.

    Competencies

  • Professionalism: Strong knowledge of statistics and data, analytical and drafting skills, ability to work in multicultural environments.

  • Communication: Clear oral and written communication, openness in sharing information.

  • Teamwork: Collaborative approach, valuing others’ input, supporting group decisions.

  • Planning & Organizing: Ability to set priorities, allocate resources, and foresee risks.

    Education

  • Advanced degree in statistics, mathematics, economics, sociology, demography, or related field required.

  • First‑level degree with two additional years of experience may be accepted.

  • Training in data analytics, business analytics, or data science desirable.

    Work Experience

  • Minimum 7 years’ progressively responsible experience in statistics and data.

  • Experience in capacity‑building projects and workshops required.

  • Experience designing and using urban/housing indicators required.

  • Experience applying digital technology for statistics desirable.

  • Experience in statistical projects and multilateral organizations desirable.

    Languages

  • Fluency in English required.

  • French desirable.
