United Nations Human Settlements Programme Index development consultant Jobs in Kenya; The Data and Statistics Unit (DSU) leads SDG 11 and New Urban Agenda (NUA) monitoring globally, developing methodologies, piloting them, building country capacity, and supporting accurate urban data generation for national and global reporting.

The consultancy supports the development of the Global Urban Monitoring Framework – Shanghai Adapted Index (SAI), a joint project with the Ministry of Housing and Urban‑Rural Development of China and Shanghai Municipal Government.

SAI helps cities apply UMF to measure sustainability in specific contexts, identify gaps in SDG and NUA implementation, and strengthen urban monitoring.

Responsibilities

  • Implement the SAI workplan 2025–2026 and draft the 2026–2027 workplan.

  • Lead development and delivery of SAI capacity‑building activities, including the SAI Digital Capacity Development Toolkit.

  • Support development of SAI application scenarios and thematic research through analyses, technical discussions, and drafting knowledge products.

  • Facilitate technical exchanges and collaboration between UN‑Habitat and Chinese partners.

  • Coordinate collaboration among UN‑Habitat divisions, Chinese counterparts, and external stakeholders.

  • Coordinate research and technical activities linking SAI with the Shanghai Award, Shanghai Manual, SDG Cities Programme, and other initiatives.

  • Organize and support SAI‑related events and outreach activities (SCGC, World Cities Day, expert meetings, workshops, advocacy).

  • Strengthen integration of SAI work within DSU and across programmes.

  • Draft, review, and finalize SAI research reports, technical papers, guidance documents, and knowledge products.

  • Provide technical, coordination, and programmatic support to the UMF team.

    Qualifications / Special Skills
  • Master’s degree in urban studies, statistics, mathematics, demography, economics, actuarial
    sciences, environmental sciences, monitoring and evaluation, or related field.

  • First‑level degree with seven additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted.

  • Minimum 5 years’ progressive experience in data analytics, indices, methodology development, or urban/human settlements research.

  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to foster team communication.

  • Familiarity with UN system and international settings highly desirable.

  • Knowledge of SDGs or New Urban Agenda desirable.

  • Experience organizing technical workshops or publicity events desirable.

  • Experience in promotion materials design and digital course design desirable.

  • Proven ability to work in teams, deliver under tight deadlines, and take responsibility for project completion.

    Languages
  • Fluency in oral and written English required.

  • Fluency in Chinese Mandarin strongly desired.

  • Knowledge of another UN language an advantage.
