United Nations Human Settlements Programme Coordinator - Advocacy, Knowledge Management and Communications Consultant Jobs in Kenya
UN‑Habitat the UN agency for human settlements; is mandated to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. Within its Strategic Plan 2026–2029, SDG localization and participatory multilevel governance are identified as key means of implementation. UN‑Habitat co‑chairs the Local2030 Coalition, the UN system‑wide platform for advancing SDG localization.
The Coordinator will steer the SDG Cities and Multilevel Governance Team’s advocacy, knowledge management, policy, and communications workstream, ensuring coherence across outputs and reinforcing UN‑Habitat’s leadership on SDG localization and multilevel governance.
Key Responsibilities
Coordination
Integrate core team members as Advocacy, Policy & Knowledge Coordinator.
Supervise and guide Communications and Strategic Engagement Officer and Advocacy/Knowledge Consultant.
Align workplans, review outputs, and ensure coherent narrative.
Coordinate planning/delivery with UN‑Habitat teams, Regional/Country Offices, and Local2030 Coalition Secretariat.
Advocacy & Strategic Engagement
Lead design and delivery of integrated advocacy and engagement strategy.
Plan and deliver networking, advocacy, and technical exchanges for SDG Cities and Partnership Platform.
Position UN‑Habitat in global policy processes (HLPF, SDG 11 review, World Urban Forum, World Cities Day, Regional Forums, UN Water Conference).
Provide strategic direction on advocacy products (speeches, policy notes, talking points).
Represent UN‑Habitat externally and cultivate strategic relationships with governments, networks, and partners.
Narrative, Knowledge Development & Communications
Act as custodian of the team’s overarching narrative on SDG localization.
Define knowledge agenda and priority policy questions.
Lead development and quality assurance of policy papers, guidance notes, and flagship reports.
Guide knowledge‑to‑policy‑to‑implementation pipeline.
Oversee systematization of knowledge resources and SDG Localization platform.
Ensure communications strategies amplify corporate narrative and reach target audiences.
Contribute to corporate reporting and Strategic Plan monitoring.
Reporting Line
Reports to the Head of the SDG Cities
and Multilevel Governance Team, Global Solutions Division. Provides technical guidance and quality assurance to Communications Officer and Advocacy/Knowledge Consultant.
Qualifications & Experience
Advanced university degree in Public Affairs, Political Science, Social Sciences, Urban Studies, Communications, Development Studies, or related field.
Minimum 5 years’ professional experience in sustainable development, urban development, governance, public policy, or international development.
Proven expertise in team coordination, advocacy, policy analysis, stakeholder engagement, knowledge management, and programme coordination.
Experience preparing high‑quality reports, briefing notes, concept notes, and substantive documents.
Experience organizing events, workshops, consultations, and multi‑stakeholder processes.
Experience supporting intergovernmental processes and international forums required.
Desirable
Experience within the UN system or international organizations.
Knowledge of SDG localization, multilevel governance, territorial development, and Agenda 2030.
Experience working with governments, local/regional authorities, development partners, or civil society.
Familiarity with partnership‑building, peer learning, and communities of practice.
Languages
Fluency in English required. Knowledge of French or Spanish an asset.
