United Nations Human Settlements Programme Climate Change and Environmental Expert Jobs in Kenya


The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN‑Habitat); is mandated to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. The Regional Programme Division (RPD) supports regional and country‑level implementation, ensuring demand‑driven and coordinated assistance. The Urban Lab is UN‑Habitat’s integrative facility, translating innovative processes into transformative solutions for sustainable urbanization.

Job Purpose

To provide technical expertise on climate change and urban resilience, support data analysis, policy review, research, and project development within the Urban Lab.

Reporting & Communication

The Consultant will work under the direct supervision of the Urban Lab Coordinators and overall supervision of the Chief, Regional Advisory & Projects Support Section.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise and input on climate change and urban resilience.

  • Develop analysis, collection, interpretation, and representation of data for climate vulnerability assessments.

  • Support review of climate, environmental, political, and regulatory frameworks.

  • Conduct desk and field research on sustainable and climate‑resilient urban development.

  • Support preparation and implementation of participatory processes, workshops, and events.

  • Advise and develop materials for outreach, communications, and capacity‑building sessions.

  • Develop normative materials and publications.

  • Support development of project proposals for international climate funds and partners.

  • Monitor and report environmental, social, and project risks.

  • Provide inputs for progress reports on project implementation.

  • Support communication and dissemination of projects and results across platforms.

    Qualifications / Special Skills

    Education

  • Advanced university degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Policy, Climate Change, or related field required.

  • First‑level degree with 2 additional years of experience may be accepted.

    Experience

  • Minimum 2 years’ relevant work in urban and territorial planning or climate change required.

  • Experience in climate‑resilient urban and territorial planning and urban water resilience required.

  • Experience within the UN system or similar organization desirable.

    Languages

  • English and Spanish required.

  • Knowledge of another UN language desirable.
