United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Senior Energy Associate Jobs in Kenya;Provide dedicated, field‑based operational and technical support to UNHCR’s energy programme across Kakuma and Kalobeyei. Serve as the primary on‑the‑ground focal point for energy activities, ensuring timely and quality delivery of interventions while channeling strategic information to the Kakuma Head of Office and Senior Energy Officer in Nairobi. Support analysis, planning, monitoring and reporting of UNHCR Kenya’s energy strategy, aligned with the Global Strategy for Sustainable Energy, the Kenya Multi‑Year Energy Strategy 2026‑2030, the Shirika Plan and KISEDP.

Roles & Responsibilities

Activity Monitoring & Implementation Follow‑up (35%)

  • Conduct regular field visits to monitor ongoing energy projects including solar electrification and electric cooking initiatives.

  • Maintain updated activity tracker and work plan dashboard.

  • Monitor quality of contractor and partner activities.

  • Verify functioning of O&M contracts and escalate issues.

  • Monitor performance of newly installed solar systems.

  • Collect and document systematic field data.

  • Prepare weekly and monthly technical monitoring reports.

    Project Implementation Support (35%)

  • Supervise training of local youth in solar systems and electric cooking device O&M.

  • Support rehabilitation of non‑functional energy systems.

  • Collaborate with WASH section on solarization of boreholes.

  • Support piloting and scale‑up of market‑based energy approaches.

    Technical Guidance & Capacity Building (15%)

  • Provide technical guidance to implementing partners.

  • Build capacity of UNHCR staff and partners on sustainable energy concepts.

  • Deliver awareness sessions for refugee and host communities.

  • Support scale‑up of renewable energy and clean cooking solutions.

    Coordination & Stakeholder Engagement (15%)

  • Act as UNHCR’s field‑level energy focal point.

  • Engage with NGO partners, government counterparts, private sector and community representatives.

  • Participate in field‑level working groups and forums.

  • Maintain structured communication with Senior Energy Officer in Nairobi.

    Monitoring &
    Progress Controls


  • Weekly field monitoring reports.

  • Monthly activity progress reports with KPIs and recommendations.

  • Contributions to Kakuma‑Kalobeyei SitReps.

  • Ad hoc technical notes and assessment summaries.

  • Accurate project documentation and lessons learned.

  • End‑of‑assignment report summarizing achievements and recommendations.

    Qualifications & Experience

    Education

  • Bachelor’s degree with 4 years’ relevant experience OR Master’s degree with 2 years’ relevant experience in Renewable Energy, Energy Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainable Development or related field.

    Work Experience

  • 2–4 years’ professional experience in renewable energy project implementation, monitoring or coordination.

  • Experience in humanitarian or development contexts is an asset.

  • Familiarity with solar energy systems (design, installation, O&M) required.

  • Experience with clean cooking technologies and market‑based approaches advantageous.

  • Prior experience in refugee or integrated development settings desirable.

  • Knowledge of KISEDP and refugee self‑reliance frameworks an asset.

    Key Competencies

  • Strong monitoring, data collection and analytical skills.

  • Understanding of humanitarian and development energy needs.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

  • Ability to work effectively in multi‑cultural, multi‑disciplinary teams.

  • Capacity to perform under pressure in remote, resource‑constrained settings.

  • Proficiency in ICT tools and energy data visualization software.
