United Nations Environment Programme UNEP Mercury Consultant Jobs in Kenya;UNEP is the leading global environmental authority, promoting sustainable development and serving as an advocate for the global environment.

The Industry and Economy Division supports sustainable consumption and production, safe management of chemicals and mutually supportive trade and environment policies.

The GEF Chemicals and Green Chemistry Unit manages all GEF projects in the Chemicals and Wastes focal area, including mercury programming and the planetGOLD initiative.

Role Purpose

The consultant will support GEF‑9 project and concept development, supervise and task‑manage projects across the Chemicals and Waste portfolio, and provide technical and operational support to the planetGOLD programme and Minamata Convention Enabling Activities.

Key Responsibilities

Project Development & Supervision

  • Develop GEF‑9 projects and concepts with experts, stakeholders and countries.

  • Support task management, reporting and technical inputs for the portfolio.

  • Hold weekly calls with Task Managers and monthly calls with executing agencies.

  • Review and clear quarterly progress and financial reports, annual workplans, budgets and procurement plans.

  • Facilitate Project Steering Committee meetings, PIR processes, legal agreement extensions and project closure.

    Technical Support

  • Support oversight of
    planetGOLD, develop PIF and PPG packages.

  • Prepare Minamata Convention MIA and NAP projects.

  • Conduct terminal evaluations of enabling activities.

  • Support integration across Chemicals and Waste and other GEF focal areas.

    Qualifications & Skills

  • Advanced degree required; first‑level degree plus 2 years’ additional experience acceptable.

  • At least 2 years’ project management experience, including international.

  • Working knowledge of GEF project development and supervision.

  • Experience implementing mercury‑related projects.

    Languages

  • Fluency in English required, including strong drafting and writing skills.

  • Working knowledge of French desired.
