The Nairobi Convention provides the intergovernmental platform for cooperation on the protection and sustainable management of the Western Indian Ocean marine and coastal environment.
UNEP serves as the Secretariat of the Nairobi Convention.
Position Summary
The Senior Coordination Officer (P‑5) leads the administration, programme development and implementation of the Nairobi Convention Secretariat.
The role ensures effective cooperation among Contracting Parties, supports intergovernmental processes, manages projects and mobilizes resources for marine and coastal protection.
Responsibilities
Supervise administration and implementation of Nairobi Convention programmes.
Convene meetings of Contracting Parties and transmit notifications, reports and information.
Carry out functions assigned by Convention protocols.
Coordinate cooperative activities agreed by Contracting Parties.
Liaise with governments, stakeholders, donors and international organizations.
Support UNEP’s Regional Seas Programme and UNEA decisions.
Develop and implement fundraising strategies.
Manage GEF and other regional projects.
Ensure gender mainstreaming in all activities.
Provide analytical support and knowledge management.
Supervise technical publications and Clearing House Mechanism.
Coordinate regional policies and strategies for marine and coastal protection.
Manage outreach, training workshops and field missions.
Provide financial management and oversee contributions to the East African Trust Fund.
Serve as spokesperson and establish partnerships.
Guide, evaluate and mentor
staff.
Lead data analysis for planning and reporting.

Education
Advanced degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Environmental Management, Environmental Law, Biology or Natural Sciences required.
First‑level degree with 2 additional years of experience may be accepted.
Training in data analytics or related fields desirable.
Work Experience
Minimum 10 years’ progressively responsible experience in marine/coastal programmes required.
At least 5 years’ experience in intergovernmental processes required.
Minimum 5 years’ experience managing large marine environment projects required.
Minimum 3 years’ experience in resource mobilization required.
Experience in data analytics desirable.
Languages
English required.
French desirable.
