United Nations Environment Programme Safeguards Analyst Jobs in Kenya;UNEP is a key partner of the UN‑REDD Programme alongside FAO and UNDP. The Safeguards Analyst will provide technical backstopping to deliver UNEP’s safeguards activities in Africa as per the UN‑REDD 2026 country workplans.

The Analyst will work under the guidance of the Safeguards Specialist, Africa Region, and the supervision of the UNEP UN‑REDD Programme Coordinator for Africa.

Responsibilities

Review national policies, laws and regulations relevant to REDD+ safeguards.

Draft technical notes, background papers, summaries and briefing materials.

Conduct analysis of safeguards gaps and alignment with UNFCCC Cancun Safeguards, ART‑TREES and other frameworks.

Document and systematize safeguards tools and guidance materials.

Maintain organized digital repositories of country safeguards materials and regulatory frameworks.

Organize safeguards‑related workshops, webinars and knowledge exchange events.

Engage and follow up with implementation partners and national consultants on safeguards.

Qualifications & Special Skills

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s) in environmental science, natural resource management, international development, forest policy, social sciences or related fields.

First‑level degree with 2 additional years of experience may be accepted.

Skills

Strong analytical and research skills.

Ability to synthesize complex information into concise outputs.

Strong drafting and editing skills.

Ability to work independently under supervision.

Teamwork and intercultural communication skills.

Background in policy analysis

required.

Knowledge of UN system and commitment to UN Charter desirable.

Ability to identify priorities and work under tight deadlines desirable.

Work Experience

Minimum 2 years in natural resources management, forestry, land‑use or related fields (for first‑level degree holders).

Experience working at country level in Africa required.

Familiarity with African environmental governance contexts required.

Knowledge in social and environmental safeguards for REDD+ and/or policy analysis/environmental assessment required.

Experience in at least one of: REDD+ implementation, nature‑based solutions, climate change, forestry, biodiversity or environmental governance required.

Familiarity with land tenure and rights systems in Africa an asset.

Experience supporting workshops or stakeholder engagement desirable.

Languages

Fluency in English required.

Working knowledge of French required.
