United Nations Environment Programme Legal Officer Jobs in Kenya; This position is located in the UNEP Industry and Economy Division, within the Plastics Unit at the Nairobi duty station, working closely with the Law Division. Under the direct supervision of the Head of the Plastics Unit and with strategic guidance of the Chief of the Industry Innovation Branch and the Deputy Director of the Law Division, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties.

Responsibilities

  • Administer programmes of legal technical assistance and capacity building related to plastic pollution.

  • Conduct legal research and analysis at country level; prepare studies, briefs, reports, and correspondence.

  • Review legal documents and instruments relevant to plastics value chain and pollution.

  • Handle issues related to interpretation and application of plastic pollution law at national, regional, and international levels.

  • Prepare drafts of background papers, legislative texts, reports, and teaching materials.

  • Collect and analyze data; provide insights through data visualization methods.

  • Prepare legal opinions/advice on issues related to plastic pollution and UNEA resolutions.

  • Prepare agreements and contracts with governments, NGOs, and other entities.

  • Provide guidance to junior staff.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Planning and Organizing: Develops clear goals, identifies priorities, allocates resources, foresees risks, and monitors plans.

    Education
  • Advanced
    university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in law with focus on environmental laws and regulations required.

  • First‑level law degree with qualifying experience may be accepted.

  • Training in data analytics, business analytics, or data science an advantage.

    Work Experience
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in drafting national law related to plastic pollution required.

  • At least 2 years of service with a government legal office addressing plastics manufacturing or pollution required.

  • Experience advising governments or companies on plastic pollution desirable.

  • Two years or more of experience in data analytics desirable.

    Languages
  • English required.

  • French, Spanish, or Arabic desirable.

    Assessment
  • Evaluation may include an assessment exercise followed by competency‑based interview.
