United Nations Environment Programme Legal Officer Jobs in Kenya; The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, UNEP’s Law Division leads work in environmental law and governance, providing technical assistance, capacity building, advisory services, and thought leadership. This position is located in the Environmental Governance Section of the Law Division, Nairobi duty station.
Responsibilities
Technical Assistance and Capacity Building
Administer programmes of legal technical assistance and capacity building under the Montevideo Programme and in relation to sustainability and circularity.
Assist in developing project proposals and resource mobilization to implement intergovernmental decisions.
Prepare or assist in drafting agreements and contracts with governments, NGOs, and other entities.
Advisory Services and Thought Leadership
Handle issues related to environmental law and governance, including interpretation and application of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs).
Draft background papers, studies, reports, legislative texts, and teaching materials.
Prepare legal opinions/advice on international public law and environmental law issues.
Assist in preparing seminars, symposia, and lectures on environmental law.
Service intergovernmental meetings, negotiations, and conferences, including UNEA.
Provide legal advice on administrative matters.
Research and Analysis Support
Conduct extensive legal research and analysis, prepare comparative studies, briefs, and reports.
Review legal documents and instruments, identifying issues and inconsistencies.
Collect and analyze data to identify trends and provide insights using data visualization methods.
Provide guidance to junior staff.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Competencies
Professionalism: Ability to apply legal principles in environmental law and governance, conduct research, interpret legislative instruments, and draft governance
papers. Knowledge of civil and common law systems, MEAs, and pollution value chains.
Communication: Speaks and writes clearly, listens attentively, interprets messages correctly, and shares information openly.
Planning & Organizing: Develops clear goals, identifies priorities, allocates resources effectively, foresees risks, and adjusts plans as needed.
Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in international environmental law or related field with environmental law coursework required.
First-level university degree with qualifying experience may be accepted.
Training in data analytics, business analytics, or data science desirable.
Work Experience
Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in environmental law or governance required.
At least three (3) years of experience in project or programme management in environmental governance or related areas required.
Experience in technical assistance and capacity building in environmental law required.
Experience in legal work relating to procedural or institutional matters of intergovernmental bodies required.
Experience related to sustainability and circularity of value chains desirable.
Two (2) years of experience within the UN system or international organizations desirable.
Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics desirable.
Languages
English required.
Spanish or French desirable.
