Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UN Environment’s Regional Office for Europe (Europe Office) – based in Geneva – promotes intergovernmental policy dialogue and regional cooperation, increases national capacity for environmental management and response emergencies, raises awareness and enhances information exchange, and translates global policies into regional action.

Responsibilities

With starting date 2 September 2019, the intern will be mainly dealing with:

  • Targeted EU outreach
  • Monitoring EU developments & news
  • Outreach events (for targeted stakeholders and/or general public)

    Under the direct supervision of the Communications/Information Assistant of the UN Environment Brussels Office, the intern will work to:

  • EU outreach
  • Support the implementation of outreach strategies in order to raise UN Environment’s profile in the development and environment fields, including by helping ensure UNEP participation in relevant flagship events in Brussels like EU Green Week and the European Development Days (see 3.)
  • Contribute to the identification of areas of common interest between the EU institutions & UN Environment
  • Monitoring EU developments
    Collect and monitor EU news and information on political developments, important decisions etc, for bi-weekly internal policy briefs
    Attend and report on conferences and meetings relevant to UN Environment’s mandate
  • Outreach events
  • Support the organization of public events, including with logistics
  • Support external communication efforts by the Brussels Office for UN Environment (high-level) visiting officials, including by helping set up media interviews
  • Support the organization of the launch of UN Environment reports in Brussels
  • Support the organization of information stands at public events (including development of interactive activities in the stand)
  • Information management
  • Update and develop UN Environment’s online tools for information exchange with the EU (website and quarterly e-newsletter)
  • Assist in keeping a good flow of internal information (UN Environment Intranet, internal reporting)
  • Assist in managing the office’s social media tools (Twitter and Facebook) and promotion of UN Environment public information campaigns
  • Other ad hoc
    duties
  • Contribute with other UN entities on collaborative events such as World Environment Day and UN Day
  • Help prepare background briefing notes on various issues as requested
  • Assist in the design and production of information material for the various outreach events

    Education

    Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications;
  • Demonstrated interest in Environmental issues, the United Nations, and/or international governance.
  • Knowledge and Interest in the European Union’s institutions and policies.

    Preferred area of study:
  • Communication/journalism, international relations/European studies or other relevant studies

    Work Experience
  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

    Languages
  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.
