United Nations Environment Programme Intern - Civil Society and Youth Engagement Programme Support Jobs in Kenya; The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority, setting the global agenda and advocating for the environment.

The Governance Affairs Office engages with Member States and non‑state actors, including Major Groups and Stakeholders.

The Civil Society Unit supports stakeholder engagement in UNEA and UNEP activities, ensuring effective participation at all levels.

Position Summary

The intern will be located in the Civil Society Unit of the Governance Affairs Office, UNEP Nairobi.

Under the supervision of the Programme Officer, the intern will support UNEP’s liaison role with Major Groups and Stakeholders, with focus on the Children and Youth Major Group and Indigenous Peoples.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning and organizing events for Major Groups and Stakeholders (Regional Consultative Meetings, Global Forum, Youth Environment Assembly).

  • Support implementation of UNEA resolution 7/6 on youth participation in environmental processes.

  • Coordinate meetings for Major Groups and Stakeholders and their Facilitating Committee.

  • Provide logistical and technical assistance and prepare post‑event reports.

  • Support meeting set‑up, receive NGOs and provide assistance.

  • Participate in meetings, prepare agendas, take minutes and summaries.

  • Facilitate stakeholder engagement in Committee of Permanent Representatives and
    informal Group of Friends.

  • Assist with organizing workshops, webinars and conferences.

  • Undertake other tasks as requested.

    Qualifications / Special Skills

  • First‑level degree in Environmental Studies, International Relations, Social Sciences, Sustainable Development, Law, Political Science or related fields.

  • Enrollment in graduate programme, final year of undergraduate, or recent graduate.

  • Good knowledge of MS Word, PowerPoint and MS Teams.

  • Ability to draft news articles or social media posts desirable.

  • Ability to design surveys and polls desirable.

    Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English required.

  • Knowledge of French or another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Spanish) an advantage.
