United Nations Environment Programme Forest and Climate Regional Advisor Jobs in Kenya; The UNEP Latin America and the Caribbean Office (LACO), located in Panama City, works closely with 33 countries of the region. The consultant will contribute to the Climate Mitigation Unit (CMU) LAC team, focusing on forest and climate policy analysis, programme support, cooperation, and operational activities.
ResponsibilitiesTechnical Analysis and Knowledge Support:
Conduct analytical review of forest and climate policy developments across LAC, with emphasis on Brazil, and prepare synthesis documents and technical briefs
Develop analytical notes and knowledge products on forest finance, jurisdictional approaches, carbon markets, and related implementation processes
Contribute to articulation of regional implementation experience in international forest and climate frameworks through briefing notes, background materials, and analytical summaries
Coordination and Programme Support:
Contribute to updating and refining CMU LAC regional workplan, ensuring coherence across country-level activities
Prepare briefing notes, talking points, and analytical inputs for UNEP’s participation in high-level meetings and policy dialogues
Provide technical inputs to support coordination between CMU LAC and UNEP global teams and initiatives
Contribute to strategic engagement processes and partnership development related to forest and climate initiatives
Support regional reporting, donor communications, and programme documentation
Cooperation and Policy Dialogue:
Contribute to design and facilitation of cross-country and interregional cooperation processes, including South–South engagement
Prepare concept notes, strategic background materials, and follow-up documentation for bilateral and multilateral cooperation initiatives
Meetings, Events and Operational Support:
Contribute to planning and organization of technical meetings, workshops, and policy dialogues (virtual or in-person)
Prepare agendas,
presentations, and summary reports
Draft Terms of Reference and other programme documentation as required
Participate in regular coordination meetings with UNEP LAC CMU team, UN-REDD Programme, and other UNEP teams
Supervision
Supervised by the Programme Management Officer of the Climate Mitigation Unit (CMU), UNEP LAC Office
Work full-time (40 hours per week), home-based with travel as required
Qualifications / Special Skills
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in environmental management, economics, geography, or related field required
Experience:
Minimum 5 years of experience working on forest finance topics in LAC region required (REDD+, carbon markets, payment for ecosystem services)
Experience preparing policy briefs, technical reports, and analytical notes for governmental or international audiences required
Experience working on environment and climate-related issues in Brazil required
Familiarity with jurisdictional approaches, climate finance mechanisms, or Article 6 discussions desirable
Languages
Fluency in oral and written English and Spanish required
Knowledge of Portuguese desirable
Knowledge of another UN language highly desirable
