United Nations Environment Programme Environmental Law Specialist Jobs in Kenya;UNEP is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the UN system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
UNEP’s Source‑to‑Sea Pollution Unit addresses land‑based pollution challenges including wastewater, nutrient management, plastic pollution, marine litter and habitat destruction. Its work contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 6 and 14, and UNEP’s Medium‑Term Strategy 2026‑2029.
UNEA‑7 resolution UNEP/EA.7/Res.4 (December 2025) recognized sargassum seaweed blooms as a severe socioeconomic and environmental issue in the wider Caribbean and West Africa. This consultancy supports delivery of the Global Report on Sargassum under operative paragraph 4(b) of the resolution, providing the evidentiary basis for a high‑level meeting and reporting to UNEA‑8.
Responsibilities
Review existing documentation including UNEP Sargassum White Paper and relevant scientific, technical and policy literature.
Review UNEP LMS training material on sargassum for factual accuracy and consistency.
Engage UNEP headquarters, regional offices and Cartagena/Abidjan Convention Secretariats to collect inputs.
Engage universities and academic institutions to strengthen collaboration and support a technical network.
Collect, organize and integrate inputs from regional offices and National Focal Points.
Conduct desk research to address information gaps, focusing on West Africa, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico.
Draft the Global Report on Sargassum covering drivers, governance, monitoring, operational response, valorization, blue economy and resources.
Coordinate bilateral consultations with regional organizations to document governance frameworks and best practices.
Coordinate peer review of the draft report and consolidate comments.
Integrate feedback from UNEP offices and peer review panel into successive drafts.
Finalize editing, formatting and layout of the report and prepare a synthesis of key findings.
Qualifications & Special Skills
Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Environmental Science, Marine Science, Oceanography, Environmental Management or related field required.
First‑level degree with two additional years of experience may be accepted.
Minimum 5 years’ professional experience in marine and coastal environmental issues required.
Exposure to harmful algal blooms, marine pollution or coastal ecosystem management required.
Excellent writing and communication skills required.
Demonstrated experience in research, technical report writing and stakeholder coordination required.
Experience working with governments, intergovernmental organizations, regional seas programmes or UN agencies desirable.
Proven experience coordinating multilateral projects and familiarity with Caribbean/West Africa regional context desirable.
Languages
Fluency in written and oral English required.
