Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Pretoria, which serves South Africa, within the Information Centres Service (ICS), Strategic Communications Division (SCD), Department of Global Communications (DGC).

The UNIC Pretoria, part of the global network of United Nations information centres, is the principal source of information about the United Nations system in South Africa. UNICs are responsible for promoting public understanding and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations by disseminating UN information materials to local audiences; engaging local and regional partners; and, overall, bringing the United Nations closer to the people it serves.

The incumbent is under the direct supervision of the National Information Officer and the overall supervision of the Director of UNIC Pretoria.

Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties:

• Assists in the implementation of global communication strategies and campaigns on social media platforms to engage with local audiences on UN priority issues and/or major events, including the coordination of activities, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up actions, and analyzing the outcomes.

• Provides specialized assistance in the production and delivery of information communications products and services on social media platforms.

• Researches a broad scope of information sources, printed and electronic; compile and present information for use in the preparation and production of communications products/services for external audiences on social media platforms.

• Assists in the organizing and implementing of social media-related campaigns and events, coordinating with diverse partners.

• Collects and produces content for social media platforms, including in local languages and various formats (e.g. infographic, video, etc.), including proposing topics, undertaking research, writing drafts, production of content (graphic design, audio/video editing, etc), obtaining clearances, editing copy, and coordinating design approval, translation procedures and distribution.

• Participates in the planning and implementation of communication campaigns on social media platforms by selecting appropriate and relevant excerpts of speeches and statements and coordinating the translation/adaptation of materials from other sources.

• Assists in public information/outreach and engagement with the public, such as outreach to schools, Model UN, putting together exhibits based on materials from UNHQ, presentations, etc.

• Assists in managing the development and updating of internal databases; updates content on social media platforms; generates a variety of standard and non-standard statistical and other reports from various databases.

• Assists in the monitoring and reporting of activities (i.e. CIMS), and evaluating activities.

• Acts as focal point on social media matters, monitoring and reporting on the latest trends and developments, responding to queries, and participating in the monitoring and evaluation on the impact of the UN campaigns on social media.

• Provides communication support to RC/RCOs, especially social media support, as needed.

• Performs related general administrative duties, as required, including the identification
of office technology needs and maintenance of equipment, software and systems.

• Provides guidance to, and may supervise, junior colleagues, including other local staff, consultants, and/or interns.

• Perform other duties as required.

Education
A high school diploma or equivalent is required.


Work Experience
  • A minimum of five years of experience in social media, public information, public relations, or related field is required.

  • Experience working with social media platforms is required.

  • Experience creating content for digital publishing formats and/or platforms, including adapting briefing notes, press releases and speeches for social media and/or websites, is required.

  • Experience in digital photography/video is required.

  • Experience in graphic design and/or desktop publishing utilising Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, and/or comparable computer software is desirable.

  • Experience in video editing utilizing Adobe Premiere and/or comparable computer software is desirable.

    Languages
    English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post
    advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

    Assessment
    Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.
