UNICEF Internship: Nutrition Intern Jobs in Ethiopia



The Nutrition Programme is a section within the UNICEF Tigray field office and is responsible for the provision of optimal nutrition services for children under-five and women.

In coordination with implementing partners, the Nutrition Programme supports the provision of emergency nutrition response interventions to protect the nutritional status of children under-five and pregnant and lactating women across Tigray region.

The intern will support the programme to strengthen Maternal, Infant, Young Child Feeding (MIYCF) Practices interventions in internally displaced peoples sites and host communities across Tigray region in collaboration with other sections and UNICEF nutrition partners.

The Nutrition Programme is recruiting for two Nutrition Interns, one to be based in Mekelle and the other to be based in Shire. Only residents of the Tigray region will be eligible.

How can you make a difference?

Under the supervision of Nutrition Specialist, the intern will undertake the following tasks:

  • Prioritize the delivery of Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IYCF-E) counseling in programme sites, and health facilities (health posts and health centers).

  • Support capacity of health workers on skills and competencies necessary for the provision of MIYCF in emergencies counselling through on job coaching and mentoring.

  • Raise demand for appropriate IYCF- E at individuals and households’ levels across the region in collaboration with other sections.

  • Print and disseminate IYCF- E promotion posters in programme sites, host communities and health facilities.

  • Prepare human interest stories, story boards and short videos on IYCF- E promotion.

  • Conduct supervision and monitoring of IYCF- E interventions in programme
    sites and health facilities to ensure the delivery of services are optimal.

  • Contribute to data collection, analysis, and reporting for the nutrition section to ensure timely comprehensive and current data on nutrition are available.

    To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • He or she should be enrolled at a university in Ethiopia at the undergraduate or graduate level or be a recent graduate (within the past two years) in nutrition, public health, social science, health Education/promotion or related technical field is required.

  • Candidates that were enrolled in full-time university studies in Tigray for a first (bachelor’s) degree prior to 2020 and who would have graduated in 2020, 2021 or 2022 in normal circumstances, are eligible. This covers all students who were enrolled and had their schooling interrupted. Please make a note of these details in your application cover letter, if applicable

  • Knowledge of relevant computer systems and applications; excellent knowledge of MS Office is required.

  • Fluency in English is required.
