General Background of Project or Assignment:

UNHCR Ethiopia Operations comprises large team of professionals working at diverse locations in the country. The healthy team dynamics, mutual understanding, respectful treatment among colleagues and clarity in communication flows are essential for successful implementation of projects, growing motivation and commitment of personnel towards the organization and delivery of services to Persons of Concern.

The consultant will be responsible to elaborate the multidisciplinary programme for team building activity, which will comprise components of interpersonal communication, understanding and internalization of the dynamics of the team by colleagues and definition of driving force that determines successful functioning of the UNHCR Ethiopia Operations team specifically.

To achieve this the consultant will work closely with HR, Staff Welfare and Security personnel of the Operations thus incorporating all pertinent factors for the development of the comprehensive programme of the Team Building exercise.

It should envisage areas contributing to successful team dynamics, such as psychosocial considerations (e.g. peer support and promotion of well-being at work place), ethics of respectful treatment and communication, as well as security and risk assessment related factors from the viewpoint of the team dynamics.

This consultancy will be a pilot intervention covering only the team of Addis Ababa. Upon assessment of the intervention, the senior management team will make a decision concerning possible replication of the given team building programme in other regions of Ethiopia where UNHCR has operational field offices and field units.

Overall Purpose and Scope of Assignment:

Concise and detailed description of activities, including measurable outputs and delivery dates, impact indicators (what qualitative and quantitative results would be achieved upon completion of individual contract), performance indicators (time lines, value of the service rendered in relation to the cost, timeliness) and work plan:

The Consultant will be expected to work closely with HR, Staff Welfare, Security and Risk Management personnel of the UNHCR Ethiopia Operations to elaborate and conduct jointly team building exercise on the premises of UNHCR’s Addis Ababa Branch Office.

The programme of the team building exercise will be expected to be multidisciplinary (comprising psychosocial considerations, respectful treatment and relationships at workplace, security and risk considerations in view of team dynamics of
UNHCR’s Ethiopia Operations, Addis Ababa team. Efficient communication flows, assertiveness development and nurturing peer support during emergency situations will likewise be envisaged as part of the aforementioned multidisciplinary programme.

The Consultant will be expected to lead in a co-facilitative manner jointly with UNHCR colleagues from HR, Staff Welfare, Security and Risk Management areas the 5 days Team Building exercise with UNHCR Addis Ababa team.

The programme of the Team Building exercise is expected to be highly interactive, provoking staff members to mingle and understand each other’s personalities better, to ascertain weak chains in communication flow and challenge their cultural perceptions thus enabling more diverse and mutually acceptive, respectful team environment.

Throughout the consultancy period, the Consultant will be responsible to complete the multidisciplinary programme of the Team Building exercise and to ensure that all relevant colleagues (HR, Staff Welfare, Security and Risk Management sections) are in agreement and endorse the programme from their side. The programme will be open for the aforementioned staff members contributions for co-facilitation purposes.

Throughout the assignment, the Consultant will be responsible for conduct of the Team Building exercise with engagement of Addis Ababa Branch Office personnel.

Lastly the assignment will also envisage cross-consultation among the multidisciplinary team of UNHCR Ethiopia Branch Office and production of the report concerning the Team Building exercise.

Qualification and Experience Required (degree required, years of work experience, field of expertise, language required):

  • Proficiency in English is required. Master’s Degree in Social Sciences, Organizational Psychology or similar disciplines is required.

  • Experience in conduct of team building exercises throughout past three years and preferably with institutions comprising minimum 100 and above staff members is a requirement.
