Background Information / Organizational Context:

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is mandated to lead and coordinate international action to protect and assist refugees.

UNHCR’s Innovation Service is committed to creating an enabling environment for innovation to flourish in UNHCR.

We are looking for a dynamic and creative Communications Intern to support us in our Innovation Service – specifically in the documentation of our Communication with Communities and Connectivity for Refugees initiatives.

We are looking for someone who understands how to make communications products accessible and engaging to multiple audiences, with a focus on the practitioner audience.

The intern will be working with the UNHCR Innovation Service in Nairobi, to support the development of guidance and documentation of promising practices related to Communicating with Communities and Connectivity for Refugees.

As a member of UNHCR’s Innovation Service, the intern will adopt a values-based approach to innovation; and we are looking for an intern who brings adaptability, transparency, humility, an
eagerness to learn to their work.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Producing quality communications products for multiple diverse audiences, specifically a practitioner audience from refugee-led organizations through to UNHCR’s own staff.
  • Working closely with key stakeholders, including Community Based Protection staff in Nairobi and remotely in Geneva to ensure that all communications products align with UNHCR’s Policy and Organizational Guidance.
  • Supporting the Innovation Service in creating non-traditional approaches to documenting promising practices from UNHCR operations, with a specific focus on community-led initiatives.
  • Working closely with UNHCR’s Innovation Service to ensure that communications materials are accessible online; this may include working remotely with Design and Communications team members in Geneva and the team’s website consultant.
  • Working with UNHCR colleagues in UNHCR’s Nairobi Branch Office to document learning and tools developed through the community-led assessment process.
  • Remote meetings with the UNHCR innovation teams based in Geneva as relevant.
  • Independently carrying out tasks as set out by the supervisor
  • Other duties and tasks by supervisor

    Minimum Qualifications Required
  • Ability to commit to a full-time position from October 2019 through December 2019
  • Strong academic performance, with academic qualifications in communications or journalism desirable
  • Strong communications skills and interest in the field of communication for capacity building and knowledge management
  • Multimedia experience in design photography, film and audio would be desirable
  • Consistent demonstration of UNHCR Values
  • Shouldn’t have other paid employment (unless willing to leave if hired for this position)
  • Respect UNHCR’s guidelines on confidentiality, UNHCR Code of Conduct and other UNHCR policies related to non-discrimination, Age, Gender and Diversity, Protection of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse and fraud

    Eligibility
  • In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
  • Recent graduate (those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
  • Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.
  • Interns are neither “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations, nor “officials” within the meaning of the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the
    United Nations of 13 February 1946, as interns are not remunerated for their work.
  • As of 1 June 2018, interns that do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive a monthly
  • Interns
    should be ready to cover their own travel to the duty station as well as any additional costs above and beyond any allowance they may receive from UNHCR.
  • It is the intern’s responsibility to arrange for a visa and to cover related costs. UNHCR can provide support with the required documents.
  • Interns are neither “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations, nor “officials” within the meaning of the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations of 13 February 1946, as interns are not remunerated for their work.
  • As of 1 June 2018, interns that do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive a monthly Food and Local Transportation
  • Allowance equivalent to 10% of the Daily Subsistence Allowance for Nairobi duty station and based on 30 calendar days (not exceeding USD 1,000 per month).
  • Interns may not represent UNHCR in any official capacity.
  • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or his/her sponsoring institution.
  • However, UNHCR will help with the visa application if applicable and advise accordingly.
  • Interns are fully responsible for arranging medical insurance covering the full internship period.
  • UNHCR accepts no responsibility for any costs connected to medical insurance of interns.
  • A copy of proof of a valid medical insurance covering the period of the contract isrequired by UNHCR.
  • UNHCR does not cover the costs of medical evacuation of interns; therefore, interns working in locations where medical facilities are inadequate are advised to ensure that their medical insurance covers emergency medical evacuation.
  • Furthermore, the health insurance selected by interns should provide the necessary geographical coverage for both accident and illness.
  • Interns are covered under the United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS) and must comply with all security policies and procedures laid out in the UNSMS Framework for Accountability, UNHCR’s Security Management Policy and Administrative Instructions, as well as all applicable security measures in the UNSMS designated area.
  • Any instances of non-compliance with prescribed security provisions may lead to the termination of the internship.
  • Interns will not engage in any activity that is incompatible with the aims and objectives of UNHCR.
  • Interns will maintain confidentiality of all unpublished information made known to them during the internship and will not publish any reports on the basis of information obtained during the period without prior written permission of UNHCR.
