UN-Habitat Waste Management Internships and Temporary Jobs

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.


The internship will be in the Urban Legislation Unit, within the Urban Legislation, Land and Governance Branch of UN-Habitat. The Unit has the mandate to promote enabling legislation adequate to meet the challenges of rapid urbanization. Urban law is the collection of policies, laws, decisions and practices that govern the management and development of the urban environment. UN-Habitat’s work on urban law focuses on its institutional priorities and the needs of Habitat Agenda Partners. This leads to an emphasis on multiple areas, including: planning for city densification and extension; land management; and innovation in urban development financing.

The UN- HABITAT Urban Law internship is for 6 months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Human Settlement Officer (Urban Legislation Unit), the intern will:

  • Assist in research and reporting in SDG indicators 11.6.1, 1.4.1 and 6.3.1
  • Support waste management projects managed by the unit
  • Evaluation of Infrastructure-led slum upgrading in Kibera after 10 years
  • Assist with concept note development for project preparation
  • Undertake other assignments as required for the development and implementation of the work programme of the Urban Basic Services Branch

    Education

    Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.

  • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Preferred area of study: Studies in law or public policy preferred. Candidates with qualifications in urban planning, development studies, economics or related studies may also be considered.

    Work Experience

  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
