UN-Habitat Urban Planner Jobs in Kenya
Duties & Responsibilities
Capacity Development & Institutional Assessment
Support training needs assessments for federal, regional, city and woreda authorities.
Conduct institutional mapping and stakeholder assessments to identify planning and governance capacity gaps.
Contribute to preparation of training curricula and learning materials on durable solutions, area‑based approaches and settlement management.
Facilitate leadership training sessions and peer‑learning activities, documenting feedback and recommendations.
Settlement Planning & Durable Solutions
Undertake settlement assessments and urban diagnostics to identify spatial challenges and service gaps.
Prepare settlement development and upgrading recommendations informed by assessments and consultations.
Support integration of durable solutions principles into local development and spatial planning.
Provide technical support to municipalities in displacement‑responsive planning approaches.
Climate‑Smart Planning & Spatial Analysis
Support collection, validation and analysis of GIS and relevant data for settlement planning.
Contribute to suitability and hazard mapping to inform planning and investment decisions.
Analyse settlement growth trends, environmental risks and access to services.
Prepare climate‑resilient planning recommendations.
Land Governance & Tenure Security
Contribute to housing, land and property assessments relevant to settlement planning.
Support development of tenure security tools and local land governance systems.
Incorporate land governance and tenure security into site identification and prioritization.
Provide technical support during stakeholder consultations and validation workshops.
Coordination, Reporting & Knowledge Management
Liaise with
bureaus, municipalities, land agencies and partners to coordinate activities.
Prepare technical reports, consultation records and project documentation.
Provide monitoring, evaluation and reporting inputs.
Document lessons learned and good practices.
Qualifications / Special Skills
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Additional training in urban planning, regional planning, human settlements, territorial planning, urban development, architecture or related field desirable.
Minimum 7 years’ relevant professional experience in urban planning or settlement development required.
Experience requirement reduced by 2 years for candidates with a first‑level university degree.
Experience using GIS and spatial planning tools required.
Experience in displacement, refugee response, recovery or durable solutions programmes desirable.
Experience in capacity development, including preparing training materials and delivering training desirable.
