UN-HABITAT Research Consultant - World Cities Report Jobs in Kenya



Organizational Setting:

UN-Habitat is the United Nations programme working towards a better urban future. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. The adoption of the New Urban Agenda (NUA) and the Sustainable Development Goals, which includes the urban goal (SDG 11) – to make cities and human settlements safe, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable, firmly place urbanization at the forefront of international development policy.

This consultancy is based in the Global Report and Trends Unit (GRTU). A major activity of this Unit is the monitoring and reporting on urban conditions and trends as a basis for the formulation and effective implementation of urban policies. The key vehicle through which this is achieved is the World Cities Report (WCR).

The WCR is the Flagship Report of UN-Habitat and is mandated by the General Assembly and the Governing Council of UN-Habitat. The WCR plays a key role in monitoring and reporting on urban conditions and trends, including progress towards the implementation and realization of the SDGs, the NUA, and other internationally agreed goals and targets relevant to sustainable urbanization— the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The WCR also synthesizes information and knowledge on the state of cities and human settlements with a view to strengthen the ability of key partners, stakeholders and governments at all levels to use such information to formulate effective urban policies.

Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of Head, Global Reports and Trends Unit within the Knowledge and Innovation Branch, the research consultant will undertake the following responsibilities:

  • Undertake peer review of the different chapters of the World Cities Report 2024 and synthesize related information from the background papers and various sources into the chapters of the Report.

  • Prepare case studies and storylines for various chapters of the World Cities
    Report 2024.

  • Perform data analysis for various aspects of the chapters of the World Cities Report.

  • Prepare graphics and other illustrative materials for the chapters of the World Cities Report.

  • Participate in Expert Group Meetings of the World Cities Report and prepare meeting notes.

  • Support preparation of the key findings and key messages for relevant chapters of the World Cities Report.

  • Prepare abridged version of the World Cities Report.

  • Crosscheck and ensure accuracy and consistency of information and data sources across chapters of the World Cities Report.

  • Compile the bibliography for the World Cities Report.

    Qualifications/special skills

  • An advanced university degree (master's degree or equivalent) in Urban Studies, Urban Planning, Geography, Economics or Development Studies with experience in urban development required.

  • A first university degree in combination with qualifying experience can be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.

  • Minimum of three years of urban and human settlements development research and policy analysis, with experience across multiple urban context desirable.

  • Experience in urban development.

  • Excellent writing skills, as well as familiarity with Data Management, Statistical Analysis and Graphic Design.

  • Previous experience in analyzing the Sustainable Development Goals Specifically Goal 11 Review is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
