Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements.

It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

Within delegated authority, under supervision of the Leader, Water and Sanitation Unit, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

Responsibilities

  • Research and compilation of information with respect to public information initiatives.
  • Perform research to identify representatives of the press, NGOs, academic and research institutes which have active or potential interests in basic services; compile and present information for use in the preparation and production of information products/services.
  • Serve as a focal point on the reporting of programmatic activities implemented by the Urban Basic Services Branch; compile and/or produce information on a wide range activities, liaising with relevant colleagues and offices; develop data collection mechanism to gather information on relevant audiences and/or clients.
  • Coordinate electronic dissemination of programmes;
  • prepare, maintain and update UN-Habitat & Urban basic services social media accounts and other official online outlets;
  • Identify and prepare new material for inclusion on appropriate social media accounts and other online outlets.
  • Provide specialized assistance to officers in the production and delivery of information communications products and services.
  • Organize media coverage of important events; liaise with news and publications agencies, public relations firms, UN photographers, etc. to provide notice of, and information on, upcoming meetings, briefings and special events and to ascertain coverage requirements;
  • coordinate technical arrangements and organize and allocate space for visiting news, photo, TV and film personnel; evaluate and process applications for UN security clearances/accreditation.
  • Organize and execute special events, coordinating with diverse partners and the media to highlight and publicize key events; Participate in the planning and coordination of major exhibits;
  • liaise with relevant departments/agencies; draft and edit reports, production schedules, press releases and related texts, and correspondence related to the planning and production of exhibits.
  • Assist in the electronic dissemination of programme outputs; prepare, maintain and update on-line reporting systems;
  • Identify and prepare new material for inclusion in appropriate reporting systems.
  • Manage, update and further develop internal databases; update web site.
  • Serve as photographic assistant by producing digital imaging, producing photo prints, and serving as back-up photographer; write captions for UN photos.
  • Using relevant computer software, create designs in appropriate format for promotional material, e.g. brochures, presentation materials, announcements, info graphics; ensure availability and appropriate packaging of products for distribution at special events, exhibits, conferences, media functions, etc.
  • Assist in the production, script writing and editing of video/film projects, radio programmes or website projects; track all production material;
  • produce scripts, cue cards, etc., select and catalog visual materials for inclusion in productions, and obtains requisite clearances and copyrights.
  • Provides guidance/training to junior staff; perform other duties as assigned.

    Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Supplemental courses/formal training in Public relations, journalism, communications, graphic design, international broadcasting would be an asset.
  • Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat.
  • Successful passing of the Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) in English at the United Nations Headquarters (UNHQ), Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG), United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV), International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) or International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) may be accepted in lieu of the GGST. The GGST is administered to applicants when required before the administration of a written assessment and/or interview.

    Work Experience

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in communication, public relations, journalism or related area is required.
  • Work experience in special events and social media platforms management is required.
  • Experience in international project work and educational outreach is desirable.
  • Experience working with Adobe Creative Suite, such as Photoshop, In Design is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For the position advertised, fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of French is desirable.
  • Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

  • Appointment against this post is for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension.
  • This job opening is only open to the staff members of the United Nations Secretariat who (1) serve in the duty station specified in the job opening; (2) hold a permanent, continuing or fixed-term appointment; and (3) have been appointed following the review of the Central Review Panel, or upon meeting other regular requirements for the duty station, job level and category and functional area.
