UN-Habitat established the Data and Analytics Unit under the Knowledge and Innovation branch of UN-Habitat as a specialized statistical unit in charge of global monitoring of the Habitat Agenda and other agendas with an urban linkage. DAU has more than 20 years' experience in the collection, analysis and production of urban data at the world level and in specific cities.

In line with UN-Habitat's mandate, DAU is working to a) Improve the capacity of countries and cities to access relevant information, setting global standards in the design analysis and collection of urban data, and supports the translation of data/information into policy formulation; b) Guide methodological developments of the urban related indicators and targets used by the international development community to monitor global progress towards implementation of the NUA and the urban SDGs; c) Improve worldwide urban knowledge base by supporting governments, local authorities and civil societies in the development and application of policy-oriented urban indicators, statistics and other urban information.

UN-HABITAT has been a pioneer organization in the collection of urban indicators. In 1991, it initiated the Housing Indicators Programme, focusing on monitoring shelter performances.

It then became Urban Indicators Programme in 1993 in order to focus on a larger range of urban issues. The programme produced two main databases in 1996 and 2001 (Global Urban Indicators Databases I and II), presented at the Habitat II Conference and the Istanbul +5 which helped establishing regional trends in key urban issues. In 2015, DAU produced the 6th iteration of the Global Urban Indicators Database.

In addition to addressing the Habitat Agenda, this database provides information on selected SDGs, especially those in Goal 11 and the New Urban Agenda (NUA). In 2020, the UN Statistical Commission tasked UN-Habitat with leading global efforts towards harmonization of monitoring of urban indicators across all UN agencies.

During the second United Nations Habitat Assembly, held on 9 June 2023 (Nairobi/Kenya) that adopted a historical resolution on “Affordable Housing for All”, Member States agreed to renew their call to prioritize adequate housing. Towards this mandate, through a collaborative effort involving other UN agencies, city and national government representatives, academia, civil society groups among others, UN-Habitat has compiled recommendations on the selection of the core set of housing indicators. For this new phase, data will be collected through various mechanisms.

To address the pressing housing global issues, it is essential to establish a core database of indicators to monitor the full and progressive realization of the human right to adequate housing. These indicators play a crucial role in tracking the progress of governments at different levels in making housing accessible and affordable to all while ensuring accountability.

Housing indicators can reveal the challenges associated with fulfilling housing rights in specific countries or regions, paving the way towards the development of effective strategies aimed at promoting and safeguarding these rights. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Data and Analytics Unit Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Head, Data and Analytics Section the intern will:

Participate in collection, computation and analysis

of human settlements Sustainable Development Goal Indicators and New Urban Agenda Indicators and other urban indicators.

Participate in collection, computation, and analysis of Housing, Land and Property Indicators data for various cities.

To assist in the collection, processing and analyzing of housing affordability data from Member states, and regional or field offices, civil society, NGOs and partner databases including those from other UN agencies, UN Statistical Division, UN Population Division, etc.

Assist with creating the tabulation plan for select indicators - Liaise with team members to advance the preparation of data

Prepare meta-data key to ensuring indicator data quality and consistency - Perform data quality checks

Prepare tables, graphs and visualizations for housing affordability data -draft 1-pager key messages of analyzed indicators

Carry out any other tasks requested to support the Data and Analytics Section. Due to volume of applications only short-listed applicants will be contacted by the Hiring Manager.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:

Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher),

Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent),

Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.

Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).

Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred areas of study: Studies in: Statistics, economics or related subjects.

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience.

However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Experience in collecting data and data base managements skills is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other UN Language is desirable.
